Srinagar, September 19: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Secretariat has admitted a private member’s resolution seeking an independent geological and seismic assessment of the proposed Baramulla–Uri railway link, amid concerns over the challenging terrain through which the project is planned.
The resolution has been moved by MLA Javid Hassan Baig, who has sought an assessment of the geological and seismic conditions along the proposed alignment before further work on the project progresses.
The proposed Baramulla–Uri rail link is planned as a new railway line connecting Baramulla with Uri in north Kashmir. The project has been described as an important extension of rail connectivity towards the Uri sector.
The demand for an independent assessment comes as preparatory activities for the project have been progressing. Soil testing for the proposed railway alignment has also been reported in parts of the route in recent months.
Baig’s resolution seeks to bring greater focus on the geological and seismic characteristics of the terrain, particularly given the mountainous landscape through which the railway would pass.
The resolution being admitted by the Assembly Secretariat means the matter can now be taken up under the prescribed legislative procedure.
The Baramulla–Uri project is expected to improve connectivity for communities along the route and strengthen access to the Uri area. The proposed line has also generated interest among residents and local stakeholders since the railway authorities cleared the project.
In September 2025, the Railways cleared the 40-km Baramulla–Uri rail link along with the 73-km Qazigund–Budgam doubling project.
The latest resolution places the focus on ensuring that the proposed infrastructure is assessed against the geological and seismic characteristics of the region before major construction activity advances.
