GANDERBAL, OCTOBER 16 : The Department of Animal Husbandry, Ganderbal, has issued a public advisory urging livestock owners and dairy farmers to remain vigilant against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), a contagious viral disease affecting cattle that can lead to significant economic losses if not detected and managed promptly.

According to the advisory, Lumpy Skin Disease is characterised by high fever, multiple firm lumps or nodules on the skin, swelling of lymph nodes, eye and nasal discharge, reduced appetite and a decline in milk production.

In severe cases, the disease may lead to respiratory complications and even death.

The department stated that the disease primarily spreads through biting insects, including flies and mosquitoes, as well as through direct contact with infected animals and contaminated bedding, feed, water and equipment.

The movement of infected animals and vehicles may also contribute to the spread of infection.

Emphasising the importance of early detection and timely intervention, the department has advised farmers to ensure regular vaccination of cattle as per veterinary guidance, maintain proper sanitation in livestock sheds, control biting insects and disinfect farm premises and equipment.

Farmers have also been advised to isolate suspected or infected animals, avoid unnecessary movement of livestock from affected areas and immediately report any suspected cases to the nearest Veterinary Hospital or Veterinary Sub-Centre.

The advisory further cautions livestock owners against selling or transporting suspected or infected animals, administering unapproved or homemade medicines, or allowing infected cattle to mix with healthy livestock.

The department has also appealed to the public not to spread rumours or create unnecessary panic.

The department clarified that Lumpy Skin Disease is not considered zoonotic and does not spread to humans, while stressing that preventive measures, veterinary supervision and responsible livestock management remain crucial to controlling its spread.

Livestock owners requiring assistance have been advised to contact the toll-free helpline 1962 for veterinary support.

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Ganderbal, reiterated that timely reporting, vaccination, farm hygiene and cooperation from livestock owners are essential to protecting cattle health, safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods and preventing further transmission of the disease.
