Srinagar, Dec 26 : The incumbent Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor, Junaid Azim Mattoo Thursday claimed victory in a floor test conducted today at SMC office. However, the incarcerated Deputy Mayor, Sheikh Imran failed to prove the support today.

The floor test was held after two separate ‘No confidence Motions’ were submitted the Corporators against Mayor and Deputy Mayor SMC on Monday and Tuesday.

According to the wire service—, the Corporator who had filed the No confidence Motion against Mattoo withdrew his papers today.

Sources said that the floor test for Mayor was still conducted wherein Mattoo proved majority and claimed victory. However, Imran who was the Deputy Mayor of SMC has failed to prove majority and lost the race.

Meanwhile, some independent corporators headed by BJP corporator, Nazir Ahmad Gilkar while addressing a presser today at Kashmir Press Club (KPC) here said that they will move to the Court against the incumbent Mayor for conducting the floor test process ‘illegally’.

“The floor test was called only for Deputy Mayor, but the Mayor has conducted the floor testing for his post himself, which is illegal as the Corporators who had signed the resolution were not informed before the floor test,” Gilkar said.

He added that the process was done ‘illegally’ and the SMC Commissioner Khurshid Sanai too has called the action of Mayor as illegal. Gilkar further stated that they (corporators) have approached to the Chief Secretary BVR Subraniyum in this regard and will now knock the doors of Court against the ‘illegal action’ of Mayor.

In the meantime, Mayor Mattoo also held a presser at a local hotel here and said that although the resolution passed by a Corporator was withdrawn, the floor test was still done to prove his majority.

“The resolution moved against me was carrying the forged sign of 12 Corporators who according to them had not signed anywhere against me,” Mattoo, accompanied by dozens of Corporators said.

He said that he was ready for the floor test since the resolution was moved against him. About Deputy Mayor who is under incarceration, Mattoo said he was asked by the authorities to visit SMC today to cast his vote but according to the officials of Sub-jail, he has showed reluctance to visit there.

“All the documents and other things were provided to Deputy Mayor on time, but still he has not reached SMC to cast his vote in floor test,” he said, adding that they have not received any resignation from him so far, but so far there were some documents floating which claimed that Imran has resigned, but on ground, no resignation has come from Deputy Mayor so far.

About new Deputy Mayor, Mattoo said there is grand to get alliance between some parties including Congress, independents and other regional parties, adding that the congress party, being largest political party has been mandated to choose a name from their party and the new Deputy Mayor will be elected soon. (KNO)
