Date:

Srinagar, Mar 07: While expressing serious concern over steep rise in drug addiction in Kashmir, former Minister and Vice President Jammu Kashmir Apni Party Usman Majid Sunday appealed the society as whole to wake up from slumber to counter drug menace which is destroying our young generation.

In a statement issued to Kashmir Despatch, Majid has expressed serious concern over “alarming increase in the drug abuse among the youth of the valley”.

“According to experts most numbers of drug addiction cases belong to a very young generation which is not only unfortunate, but disastrous for the society,” Majid said, in a statement, adding that the grim picture of drug abuse in the Kashmir has put a lot of challenges for the people of the valley in general and for Government agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations in particular.

The biggest challenge is the illegal trafficking and sale of drugs within the valley to which police and civil society have an important role to play.He further added, “The need of the hour calls for effective policing against narcotic smuggling, besides having more drug de-addiction centers in JK UT.

The challenge has to be confronted at multiple levels, and of them all basic awareness campaigns must begin at schools, colleges and university level urgently.

The parents and civil society also must put in their efforts to curb the menace. The menace has to be tackled at societal level.”He said that growing drug abuse among the youth is fast emerging as a major challenge and eating into the vitals of Kashmiri society.

Meanwhile, Usman Majid urged every section of the society including parents, teachers, Imams, and others to come forward and work for the awareness and eradication of drug addiction in Kashmir.
