While as the other essential service departments have put their machinery in action tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, the councilors of Sopore Municipal Council are without a job portfolio.
The elected members of Sopore Municipal Council claim that they have no idea as what they are supposed to do and what’s their job profile.
“Several months have passed by when the Municipal Council elections were held in Sopore but we don’t know what we are supposed to do. The elected members are without a president since then but the UT administration and the district administration is no mood to hold an election for president post here in Sopore which is hampering the work,” one of the elected councilors told Kashmir Despatch over phone.
He said that MC is supposed to play an important role but unfortunately Sopore Municipal Council is without a head and are not able to deliver productive for their people.
“The councilors, sanitization and other teams of the municipal Council have been declared the front line workers by Urban and Local Bodies department but in Sopore the front line workers of MC Sopore don’t even know what they are supposed to do in these conditions. When the department is headless how can they know their job profile,” the councilors said.
The councilors appealed the office of district commissioner Baramulla to look into the matter and resolve the issues on war footing basis.
Meanwhile the sanitization team of MC Sopore today asked for covid warrior allowances as provided to other departments by the government.
“Other departments are being provided by allowances for working in these tough conditions but the municipal workers are being neglected by the government though we work day and night without any proper gear. The government should also think about our families as we too are front line workers,” a member of MC Sopore said.
