Not a single day passes by but the media platforms and newspapers are replete with the news about horrible highway accidents and road mishaps where precious lives are lost on a routine now.
This is just like some ominous and malignant spell where people appear to have lost control over their vehicle and thus result in such accidents. However, this problem is multifaceted for which both government and vehicle owners need to take some requisite steps.
The National Jammu-Srinagar Highway has become jinxed with terrible accidents where most of the vehicles slip into deep gorges. The chances of surviving an average accident on this road is very slim. But the resolution and revamping of this route on a major scale has always remained a distant dream. Not only people loose their lives but also it incurs huge economic losses on the business sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
Besides, amateur driving has also become an deplorable norm where youngsters own modified and high end bikes that is meant just for show. However, most of the times influenced with movies and pop culture, many youth have tried to perform stunts tht have yielded disastrous consequences.
Apart from this, on a hollistic level, the driving etiquettes of an average vehicle owners in J&K is often poor and relentless which is potentially causing the rise in vehicle accidents. The government besides implementing strict rules on drivers should also try to mend the deplorable conditions of the roads in order to avoid these mishaps. It is only then when our driving could be considerable called as ‘Safe’.
