SRINAGAR, Nov 29: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Tuesday distanced itself from its corporator Nazir Gilkar’s press conference in which he had claimed withdrawal of support to Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor Junaid Mattu.
Talking to Kashmir Despatch, BJP Spokesman Altaf Thakur said that action will be taken against those who held a press briefing because the party was not aware of its agenda and those who interacted with the press had no Party mandate. He said: “They (Nazir Gilkar) do not have any authority to support or withdraw any support in SMC. Even if the situation had warranted so, BJP had its chief whip in the Corporation. He would have issued a whip.”
The BJP JK spokesman said that such decisions lie within the discretion of the senior party leaders like BJP president (J&K) Ravindra Raina, and Party general secretary Sunil Sharma.
Pertinently, On Monday BJP Councilor Nazir Gilkar and Election In Charge Asif Masoodi at a press conference said that BJP has withdrawn support to Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu.
The duo in a press conference had said the BJP in a formal meeting held in Jammu had unanimously decided to withdraw the support to SMC Mayor and even support the ‘independent’ group that will bring a ‘no-confidence motion’ against the Mayor.
