GMC Baramulla performs thrombolysis procedure for heart attack using ‘novel’ drug

Srinagar, Dec 31 : Doctors at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla have successfully performed thrombolysis procedure for acute inferior wall myocardial infarction, colloquially known as ‘heart attack’, using a “novel drug Tenecteplase (TPA)”.

A statement by the GMC said that doctors at its Accident & Emergency Department performed the procedure using TPA on Friday last. “The drug showed significant recanalization within just 15 minutes of its use,” it said in a statement, adding, “It the first time such a novel drug has been used in GMC Baramulla for thrombolysis.” The drug being very expensive but life saving has been kept available for free for such patients, it said. “The patient was diagnosed with Acute IWMI with ST1 in leads II, III & aVf & successfully thrombolysed within 15 minutes using Tenecteplase, as efficient as PCI”.

The statement said that Dr.Parvaiz Masoodi, Medical Superintendent GMC Baramulla “who has made this new drug available in GMC associated Hospital” congratulated and encouraged the whole team involved in the procedure.
