Baramulla: Amid Covid-19 crises, a new born died allegedly due to doctors’ negligence in Associate Hospital of Government Medical College Baramulla sparking protest against the errant doctor and paramedics with health authorities on Monday ordered departmental probe to investigate the death of newborn.
Taking to Kashmir Despatch, distressed father of slain newborn Mohammad Saleem Mir of Sheeri Mirher in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district alleged that due to the negligence of doctor at GMC Baramulla hospital his baby died and his wife survived miraculously.
“On April 25, I admitted my wife Nazira Nazeer GMC Hospital with labour pain under IPD registration number 587 and doctors kept her under observation till evening and advised us various tests. Late in the evening, a senior consultant surgeon doctor after examining the tests told Dr. Suhail who came for night shift to take care of the patient and if she doesn’t deliver normally by 10.00 pm then go for surgery during night and don’t wait till morning.”
“My wife complained a severe labour pain at about 1o:30 pm. We approached the doctor and nursing staff, they didn’t bother to check the patient. Dr. Suhail told all patients that he was tried and fasting so he can’t do number of surgeries and bolted his room and slept for entire night,” he alleged.
He added that his wife was crying and withering with labour pain for whole night and they pleaded before doctors and staff to go for surgery but they didn’t paid any attention due to which the newborn died.
“After repeatedly pleading before labour room staff for examination of my wife during night, next day morning they took her inside and after three hours they called a surgeon and informed me that my first baby died,”
They said that now doctors have written three turns of cord round the neck, “why they didn’t ask for a USG at the first place and if the cord was round the neck why didn’t doctor go for LSCS,” the family inmates asked.
After child’s death, family members and relatives of the newborn staged strong protest against the doctor and stern action against the erring doctor.
“ We want stern action against the doctor and probe into the negligence. We are left at the mercy of arrogant and rude doctors who treat patients like animals,’ said Mohmmad Ramzan Mir, grandfather of the newborn.
Later, family filed a written complaint with Principal GMC Prof. Abdul Hamid and Medical Superintendent Dr. Syed Masood who assured them departmental probe into the death of newborn.
Taking to Kashmir Despatch, Prof. Abdul Hamid said that the patient admitted in the hospital was examined by gynecologist. During baseline investigation her platelet count of the patient came less and doctor advised her for repeat the test.
“She was kept under observation for night and in the morning tests came normal. And a physician had also examined her. Later, the patient came in full labour pain but due to unexplained reasons the newborn died,” said Principal GMC. Dr. Hamid.
He ruled out any fetal distress and meconium as cause of death, however, he said there can be number of unexplained reasons.
“We are investigating the death of the neonate and action will follow if anybody is found guilty,” he added.
