SRINAGAR, April 23: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday led a poignant protest march through the heart of Srinagar to condemn the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead, most of them tourists.
The march, joined by scores of PDP leaders, workers, and sympathizers, began from the party’s headquarters located near Sher-e-Kashmir Park. With somber expressions and visible grief, the participants moved in unison, decrying the brutality of the attack which occurred just a day earlier.
Holding placards that read, “This is an attack on all of us,” “Killing innocents is an act of terror,” and “Stop innocent killings,” the protestors raised slogans against the senseless violence that has once again stained Kashmir’s scenic image with blood.
The procession made its way towards Lal Chowk, the historic city centre often regarded as the political nerve centre of the Valley. There, Mehbooba Mufti addressed the gathering, expressing anguish over the recurring cycle of violence and reiterating her party’s stance that such acts only push the region further into despair.
“This massacre is not just an attack on tourists, but an attack on the very soul of Kashmir. We have always stood against violence, and we will continue to raise our voice until the bloodshed ends,” Mufti said.
The attack, which took place on Tuesday in the picturesque Baisaran meadows of Pahalgam — a popular tourist destination — is being described as one of the deadliest assaults on civilians in Kashmir in recent years. Authorities have launched a massive investigation, and security has been heightened in all major tourist areas across the Valley.
The protest march by PDP is among the first political demonstrations in response to the attack, signaling growing concern among political leadership about the deteriorating security situation and its impact on tourism and public morale.
