Citing Sopore funeral, AG tells SC “4G is a question of national security

Date:

Srinagar: In the petition regarding the restoration of high-speed internet in Jammu and Kashmir in the Supreme Court, the Attorney General has cited “serious issues in J-K”, calling it a “question of national security.”

“Recently a militant was killed and 500 people showed up for his funeral,” he said, highlighting a gathering at a militant’s funeral in Sopore, north Kashmir.

As the world fights against the COVID-19 pandemic, J-K struggles with restricted internet connectivity. The internet was snapped in August 2019 when the government scrapped the region’s special status. The connectivity was restored gradually nearly after five months; however, the mobile internet continues to be restricted to 2G speed.

The Solicitor General has sought more time to file affidavit. The Supreme Court also asked the Center and J-K administration to get information about the ground situation in J-K and file a detailed affidavit by Sunday.

The next hearing has been scheduled for Monday.
