Detention of two persons under PSA revoked

Date:

Srinagar:The Jammu and Kashmir Government has revoked the detention of two south Kashmir youth who were booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) by the authorities after the August 5 revocation of Article 370, reported The Tribune.

They were identified as Mudassir Maqbool Teli and Shabir Ahmad Bhat. Teli, hailing from Anantnag district of south Kashmir, was booked under the PSA, vide an order issued by the District Magistrate on August 14, 2019, Bhat, who hails from Kulgam district, was booked under the PSA on August 16, 2019. Initially, the duo was ordered to be lodged at Central Jail, Srinagar. Later, both were shifted outside J&K, said the report.

Soon after their detention, the family members of the duo had challenged their detention before the High Court by filing habeas corpus petitions, it said.

However, as the matter came up before the high court, in both cases, the government counsel informed the respective benches that their PSA had been revoked.

“The counsel for the respondents has produced a copy of the government order, dated 09.01.2020, issued by Principal Secretary to Government, Home Department, whereby detention order dated 14.08.2019, issued by District Magistrate, Anantnag, has been revoked. In view of the matter, counsel for the petitioner does not want to press the petition. The petition is disposed of as rendered infructuous,” Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur noted in his orders delivered in the petition, challenging the detention of Mudasir Maqbool Teli this week.

In the same manner, the authorities also revoked the PSA detention of Shabir Ahmad Bhat, The Tribune quoted his counsel advocate Naseem Qadri as having said.
