India, Afghanistan Seek to Revive Trade As Relations Thaw

Date:

India and Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government are moving to revive bilateral trade through Iranian ports as relations normalize. The decision emerged from a meeting in Dubai between India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, marking their first official interaction since the Taliban assumed power in 2021, as reported by Bloomberg.

The two sides agreed to utilize Iran’s Chabahar Port to boost trade and commerce, with India considering new development projects in Afghanistan alongside ongoing humanitarian aid. Misri reiterated India’s commitment to assisting Afghanistan’s health sector and refugee rehabilitation, reflecting efforts to address the country’s urgent developmental needs.

Afghanistan’s foreign ministry assured that its territory poses no threat to India and requested more visas for Afghans seeking medical treatment or business opportunities in India. The meeting highlights India’s bid to strengthen ties amid strained relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which has accused the Taliban of harboring militants attacking its soil.

India’s engagement with Afghanistan comes at a time when only a few nations, including China, Russia, and Pakistan, recognize the Taliban regime. New Delhi aims to improve ties, building on previous interactions like the visit of an Indian diplomat to Afghanistan last November to meet the defense minister.

India has already provided substantial aid to Afghanistan, including food, vaccines, and earthquake relief. The foreign ministry also plans to explore collaborations in sports, a sector resonating with Afghanistan’s youth.

As regional dynamics shift, India’s renewed focus on trade, aid, and people-to-people connections with Afghanistan could pave the way for deeper engagement and mutual benefit.
