Boosting Tourism and Livelihood Opportunities
In a collaborative effort between the Indian Army, TYCIA Foundation, and SIDBI, Proj Jazba has been initiated with the aim of empowering local communities in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. The project seeks to promote sustainable tourism, boost economic growth, preserve cultural heritage, and empower families in the region. Specifically, the Indian Army and other stakeholders have joined forces to uplift 50 families by providing them with sustainable livelihood opportunities, primarily in the tourism sector.
Under Project Jazba, each beneficiary has received support from SIDBI, amounting to up to Rs 40,000, in order to uplift marginalized sections of society and establish means of livelihood. Among the 50 families, nine families have been facilitated with fully furnished homestays, offering tourists an opportunity to immerse themselves in the local way of life. These families have undergone training in hospitality and customer service to ensure a pleasant stay for visitors.
Moreover, one family has been designated and trained to handle a community kitchen, catering to the culinary requirements of guests staying in the accommodations. The region’s traditional delicacies will be prepared, providing visitors with an authentic taste of Kashmir. Additionally, three families have been supported in establishing roadside cafeterias, serving local and traditional cuisine to travelers seeking a break during their journeys.
As part of the project, four families have been equipped with horses to offer guided horseback tours to tourists, allowing them to explore the picturesque landscapes of Kashmir using a traditional mode of transportation. Furthermore, one family has received support to set up a beauty parlor, catering to the grooming and beauty needs of tourists. Two families have been empowered to run petty shops, offering local products and souvenirs to visitors. Additionally, six families have been provided with musical equipment, enabling them to showcase traditional music and cultural performances for tourists.
To facilitate adventurous experiences, four families have been equipped with All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), which will be utilized for guided tours across challenging terrains, providing tourists with an adrenaline-pumping experience. Moreover, provision of cows and sheep to five families will assist them in dairy and wool production, thereby supporting their livelihoods.
Recognizing the importance of family tourism, three households have been facilitated with kids’ play stations, enhancing the overall experience for children. Furthermore, one family has been provided with a zorbing ball, allowing visitors to roll down slopes enclosed in a giant inflatable ball. These initiatives reflect the Indian Army’s commitment to uplifting local communities, providing them with sustainable livelihood opportunities, and promoting the cultural and natural heritage of the region. The locals have expressed their gratitude and admiration for the efforts made by the Indian Army in facilitating their livelihoods and contributing to the development of the nation.
