Srinagar, Dec 02: Cab aggregator Uber has officially launched its first water transport service in India, enabling users to book traditional shikara rides on Dal Lake through the Uber app.

The Uber Shikara service marks Asia’s first water transportation initiative of its kind and follows similar services in European cities, such as Venice. In its initial phase, the company has on boarded seven shikaras, with plans to gradually expand the fleet based on demand.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed that the launch of Uber Shikara in Srinagar illustrates how technology can enhance cultural heritage. “The launch of Uber Shikara in Srinagar is a testament to the creative ways technology can enrich our cultural legacy. This offering, just in time for the upcoming tourist season, will provide visitors with a seamless way to experience the timeless charm of shikara rides, a hallmark of Jammu and Kashmir’s beauty,” Sinha as per Kashmir Despatch stated on X (formerly Twitter).

Dal Lake, a large freshwater lake and one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations, is often referred to as “Srinagar’s jewel.” The lake is significant for both tourism and recreation, as well as supporting various commercial activities.

In a post on its official micro-blogging site, X, Uber announced, “Introducing Uber Shikara in Srinagar! The perfect blend of tradition and technology! 🚤📲 Now you can book your serene shikara ride up to 15 days in advance. With just a tap on the Uber app, you’re ready to set sail. Experience Dal Lake like never before. 🌅 #UberShikara”

Meanwhile, Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, stated, “Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition, providing a seamless experience for travelers booking their shikara rides. We are proud to create this iconic experience, enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir.” He also confirmed that the company is not charging any fees from its shikara partners, with the full fare being passed directly to them.

Detailed information reveals that Uber Shikara rides are available for one-hour periods between 10 AM and 5 PM, accommodating up to four passengers from Shikara Ghat No. 16. Bookings can be made up to 15 days in advance, with a minimum notice of 12 hours.

Wali Mohammad Bhatt, President of the Shikara Owners Association, mentioned that there are approximately 4,000 shikaras in Dal Lake and expressed hope that Uber will onboard more shikara partners in the future.
