New Delhi, May 06 ; Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and said India will now use the water for is own interests.
Speaking at an event organised by ABP Network, PM Modi as per Kashmir Despatch emphasized that water from Indian rivers, which previously flowed out of the country, will now be harnessed for national development.
“Bharat ka paani, Bharat ke haq mein bahega (India’s water will now flow for India’s benefit),” he declared, without directly naming Pakistan.
PM Modi’s statement comes against the backdrop of the government taking steps to cut off water flow to Pakistan from the Baglihar dam on the Chenab river and preparations to taper down runoffs from the Kishanganga project on the Jhelum.
India has paused the six-decade-old Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, already strained by long-running disputes, after terrorists killed dozens of tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22.
Nation First Policy Drives Bold Decisions
PM Modi also highlighted his government’s commitment to prioritizing national interests over political considerations. He criticized past administrations for delaying crucial reforms due to apprehensions about international opinion or vote bank politics.
“For decades, decision-making was hindered by concerns over ‘what the world will think.’ But progress happens only when a nation puts itself first,” he said.
Citing achievements from the past decade, the Prime Minister noted that 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty, proving that democracy can deliver transformative results.
“Big decisions were postponed for years, but our government has taken bold steps one after another—always keeping India’s interests at the forefront,” he asserted.
Last week, Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil said, “We will ensure that not even a drop of water from the Indus river goes to Pakistan.”
