Reports suggest that suicides in Kashmir are witnessing an alarming surge and during one year only 500 cases of suicides were reported in SMHS hospital Srinagar.
If the daily incidents are any indicator there are multiple factors which are responsible for this irrational behavior of our people especially the young ones.
Domestic violence, unemployment, drug menace, matrimonial break up so on and so forth…the government needs to constitute a fact finding team of experts who will suggest the future course of action.
The decades old conflict has already eaten into vitals of our society and the stress level among our people is so high that psychiatrists and counselors suggest that a large extent of patients will not turn to hospitals with trivial complaints if appropriate counseling sessions take place in Kashmir.
The present dispensation needs to focus on argumentation of health infrastructure especially the psychiatric hospitals at each sub district level if it all it is serious to tackle the rising number of psychological issues among the people.
Suicidal tendencies also surface if the innate psychiatric issues are left unaddressed. Parents also need to come forward besides the civil society groups if we want to prevent suicide cases or at least bring the numbers down in Kashmir.
