Historic Turnout Shatters Boycotts, Signals New Era

SRINAGAR, June 06: The Summer capital Srinagar has emerged as a game changer in the recently held 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Voter turnout reached approximately 38 percent, with around 6,75,399 voters casting their ballots out of 17.47 lakh eligible voters. A total of 24 candidates vied for a seat in Parliament.

This Lok Sabha election is historically significant for Kashmir, being the first general election since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. The absence of boycott calls from separatist leaders or organizations added an intriguing dimension to this electoral cycle.

In the Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency, key candidates included the National Conference’s Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, People’s Democratic Party’s Waheed ul Rehman Para, and Apni Party’s Mohammad Ashraf Mir. Despite expectations of a close race between the NC and PDP, the NC dominated from the first round.

Voter turnout in the Kashmir Valley saw a remarkable 30-point increase from the 2019 elections, jumping from 19.16% to 50.86%. Srinagar, Baramulla, and Anantnag-Rajouri constituencies registered turnouts of 38.49%, 59.1%, and 54.84%, respectively. The Udhampur and Jammu constituencies reported even higher turnouts of 68.27% and 72.22%.

Ladakh, now a separate Union Territory since 2019, also saw enthusiastic participation with a 71.82% voter turnout. This election cycle highlights a significant embrace of democracy by the people of J&K, particularly among younger voters.
