New Delhi: Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi has been appointed as the new Army chief by the Government. He is currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and will take over the position on June 30, 2024.
The official order states that the present Chief of the Army Staff, General Manoj C Pande, will retire on June 30, 2024. Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi was born on July 1, 1964, and was commissioned into the Infantry (Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984.
Throughout his 40-year career, Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi has served in various Command, Staff, Instructional, and Foreign appointments. He has held Command appointments including Regiment Command, Brigade Command, DIG of Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps.
As a Lieutenant General, he has also held important appointments such as Director General Infantry and General Officer Commanding in Chief of the Headquarter Northern Command from 2022-2024.
Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi is an alumnus of the Sainik School Rewa, National Defence College, and US Army War College. He has also undergone courses at DSSC Wellington and Army War College, Mhow. Additionally, he was conferred with the Distinguished Fellow in the equivalent NDC course at USAWC, Carlisle, USA.
The officer holds an M Phil in Defence & Management Studies and two Master’s Degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science. He has been honored with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.
Furthermore, Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi has been appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
