Man Injured As Sand Mine Caves In At Handwara

Handwara, Aug 26 : A person received critical injuries after a sand mine he was working on caved in on Thursday afternoon in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said.

They said that Nazir Ahmad son of Mohammad Subhan was working on illegal sand mine in his native village Rangpeth Ashpora in Qaziabad when the incident occurred.

He was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital in critical condition from where he was taken to GMC Baramulla for advanced treatment, they said.

It has been in the meantime learnt from the hospital officials that the condition of the injured person continues to remain critical.

Meanwhile the locals have blamed Geology and Mining Department Kupwara for giving free hand to people in excavating the minerals illegally.

The concerned department was informed several times but they are paying heed towards the issue, the locals alleged. No official from the department could be contacted for comment. (GNS)
