NAM & Cold War 2.0

Date:

From last two to three months rumours were hot about a possible Russian invasion on Ukraine as the former initiated a series on military drills just near the border.

US and NATO members cautioned Putin of dire consequences in case of any misadventure while keping on threatening Russia with stringent imposition of sanctions. However, Putin had made his intentions very much clear & thus the invasion of Ukrainian began this week.

In various international summits & meetings President Putin had always criticised the role of NATO in Europe especially with regards to the former allies of Warsaw pact. It seemed that Russian supreme leader was in search of the lost glory which was obliterated by US & its allies on 26 December 1991.

Invasion on Ukraine is just part of a bigger political gameplay that envisages to put back former allies of USSR through treaties and even invasion. This was obvious as the forces from Belarus also poured into Ukraine alongwith the Chechen forces that are under the command of President Ramzan Kadyrov.

Besides, Putin had already made it clear in his video message to the leaders of other nation to stay out of this conflict, otherwise face the consequences. This dire warning was something which the world had not experienced since the end of cold war.

However, in this tussle of power grabbing between two superpowers, the golden policy of Non-Alignement holds key to security. India has the immense potential to lead the Asian and African countries out of this neo-cold war that will foster cooperation between them & won’t deter their progress while getting involved in someone others war.

NAM once again holds great relevance in these circumstances. It can help to ease the tensions as Non-Alignement has never implied non-interference. Besides, the more countries join NAM less arenas of cold war will be left there.
