The recent all party meeting called by the Prime Minister Modi on June 24, this year was a good starter. Not only this meeting broke the political lull in Jammu and Kashmir but it also generated a lot of hope among the people that government of India will take some concrete measures to rebuild the lost trust.
14 political leaders represented Jammu and Kashmir in their own perspective. The National Leadership is said to have accorded a patient hearing to all of them and which is a big take away from that meeting. It is over two years now that people of Jammu and Kashmir are being governed under presidential rule and there is no elected government in place.
A plethora of problems faced by the common people vis-à-vis their day-to-day issues of basic amenities seems falling on deaf ears. Bureaucratic regime is not only creating a wedge between the government and the people but there seems a vested interest that is trying to keep the elected representatives at bay for the time being.
Government of India is aware of this situation but has its own compulsions to prolong the Lt. Governor’s rule in this region, primarily because of its security concerns. Whatever the motives behind this delay in granting statehood to erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and going for assembly elections, need of the hour is to continue with its dialogue process with the political representatives so that people are not put to more inconvenience.
