NFCH plans evaluate impact of its scheme for J&K conflict orphans

Srinagar, Jan 03 : The National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH) is planning to undertake third party evaluation of its progamme under which orphans of the ongoing armed conflict in J&K are being provided assistance.

According to wire service—, a meeting held recently here, secretary NFHC informed J&K government that they are planning to evaluate impact of scheme in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Secretary, NHFC informed that they are going; to have third party evaluation of the project Assist through  Rehabilitation Council and University of Kashmir in order to asses impact of the scheme of the ground,” reads minutes of the meeting held here on December 26.

During the meeting, divisional commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan suggested that NFCH should come up with a written proposal for third party evaluation so that he will take up matter with the CS.

The meeting was held to review financial support provided to children rendered orphans by three-decade-old conflict in J&K. The Rehabilitation Council of J&K provides financial assistance the victims of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

After the outbreak of armed conflict in J&K in 1989, thousands of children have lost their parents in Kashmir valley. A study by UK-based Save The Children revealed that 37 percent of 214000 children were orphaned due to ongoing armed conflict in J&K.

According to the report, the proportion of children orphaned due to conflict is highest in  Anantnag district of south Kashmir.

“The largest number of children orphaned due to conflict were in Islamabad (Anantnag) (56 percent), followed by Ganderbal (48 percent), Baramulla (33 percent) and Rajouri (31 percent),” the report says, adding that number of orphans is higher in Valley than Jammu due to the conflict. (KNO)
