Snow Slides Off Rooftop, Man Buried Alive in South Kashmir’s Shopian, Rescued by Police

0

Shopian, Jan 25: A potentially fatal incident was narrowly averted in the Heerpora area of Shopian district when a massive heap of snow suddenly slid off a rooftop and buried a man standing below, officials said on Sunday.

The incident occurred within seconds, leaving the man completely trapped under heavy snow with no time to react. The sudden collapse created panic in the area as the victim disappeared beneath the snow.

Police personnel deployed on road duty nearby heard the loud sound of the snow slide and immediately sensed danger. Without waiting for additional support or equipment, the police rushed to the spot and began digging through the snow with their bare hands.

Officials said the swift and instinctive response of the police personnel proved crucial. After frantic efforts, the man was pulled out alive from beneath the snow, shaken but safe. He was later provided immediate assistance and was reported to be out of danger.

Locals said the incident could easily have turned into a tragedy had the police delayed their response even by a few moments. Residents of the area expressed deep gratitude to the police personnel, praising their alertness and courage.

The rescue has been hailed as a reminder of the risks posed by heavy snowfall and accumulated snow on rooftops, particularly during fluctuating temperatures. Officials have advised people in snowbound areas to remain cautious and clear rooftops safely to avoid such incidents.

Police officials said their personnel remain on high alert during the ongoing winter conditions to respond swiftly to emergencies and ensure public safety across snow affected areas. [KNT]

Republic Day 2026: Time for Kashmir to Reclaim the Spirit of Participation

0

For more than three decades, the people of Kashmir have lived through an era defined by uncertainty, fear and relentless turmoil. Terrorism, political instability, shutdowns, strikes and bloodshed have collectively scarred generations. Childhoods were spent amid gunfire and curfews, education was repeatedly disrupted, businesses suffered irreparable losses, and the social fabric of the Valley was pushed to the brink. Today, as the nation prepares to celebrate Republic Day, a profound question confronts us: how long will Kashmir remain a reluctant spectator to its own constitutional identity?
Republic Day is not merely a ceremonial event marked by parades and official speeches. It commemorates the day when India adopted its Constitution — a document that guarantees rights, dignity, equality and justice to every citizen, including the people of Jammu and Kashmir. For Kashmiris, participation in Republic Day celebrations must go beyond symbolism; it must be a conscious declaration that the Valley chooses peace over violence, democracy over disorder, and progress over prolonged pain.
The bitter truth is that terrorism has brought nothing but devastation to Kashmir. It has neither delivered dignity nor secured a future for the youth. Instead, it has filled graveyards, emptied classrooms, destroyed livelihoods and forced countless families into mourning. The so-called “cause” sold to impressionable minds has only deepened misery. Enough is enough. The Valley has paid an unbearable price, and the time has come to decisively reject the culture of fear and silence.
Wholehearted participation in Republic Day celebrations sends a powerful message — not to New Delhi alone, but to the world and, more importantly, to ourselves. It signals that Kashmiris are reclaiming their agency, their voice and their future. Hoisting the tricolour, attending local functions, encouraging children to understand the Constitution, and engaging peacefully in civic life are acts of courage in a region long held hostage by intimidation.
Critics may argue that celebrations do not address political grievances or historical wounds. But disengagement has achieved nothing either. Change is not born from withdrawal; it emerges from participation. Democracy functions when citizens step forward, not when they retreat into enforced apathy. By participating, Kashmiris assert their right to demand development, justice, accountability and good governance through constitutional means rather than conflict.
The youth of Kashmir, in particular, must reflect deeply at this juncture. A generation that has grown up amidst violence deserves a different destiny. Republic Day should be an opportunity to reconnect young minds with the ideals of liberty, fraternity and equality — values that empower, not destroy. The future of Kashmir lies not in stones, guns or slogans, but in education, innovation, entrepreneurship and democratic engagement.
Equally important is the role of parents, teachers, civil society and religious leaders. They must encourage a narrative that prioritizes life over loss and hope over hatred. Celebrating Republic Day does not mean surrendering identity; it means strengthening it within the framework of peace and constitutional rights.
The administration, too, must ensure that celebrations are inclusive, dignified and people-centric rather than overly securitized. Trust is built through sensitivity, transparency and genuine outreach. When people feel respected, participation follows naturally.
After over thirty years of turbulence, the people of Kashmir stand at a crossroads. One path leads to continued suffering, stagnation and fear. The other offers peace, participation and progress. Republic Day is not a solution in itself, but it is a symbolic beginning — a collective step towards healing and normalcy.
Let this Republic Day mark a turning point. Let Kashmir rise not in defiance, but in dignity. Let the Valley choose life over loss, hope over despair, and participation over paralysis. The Constitution belongs to the people — and the people of Kashmir must claim it, confidently and wholeheartedly.

Delhi, Jan 24:

On the eve of the 77th Republic Day, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri Shripad Yesso Naik interacted with beneficiaries of flagship schemes of Government of India, PM-JANMAN, DA-JGUA and PM-KUSUM, who have been specially invited to attend the Republic Day Celebration this year.

The interaction reflected the Government’s steadfast commitment to inclusive development and last-mile delivery under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

During the interaction, beneficiaries from tribal and rural backgrounds shared firsthand experiences of how access to electricity and clean energy has transformed their daily lives, improving education outcomes, healthcare access, livelihoods, safety and overall dignity.

The Minister highlighted the significant progress achieved under Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), launched on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas in November 2023 to electrify households belonging to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Out of around 1.43 lakh identified households, electrification has been completed in nearly 1.36 lakh homes, about 95% progress, through coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Power, State Governments and DISCOMs.

The Minister also outlined the progress under the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyaan (DA-JGUA), launched in October 2024 to extend development benefits to Scheduled Tribe habitations. Under this scheme, a central grant of ₹4,203 crore has been sanctioned for electrification of over 2.83 lakh households and more than 4,200 public places, with around 56,000 households already electrified. Special relaxations in cost norms have been provided to ensure electrification of remote and previously unconnected habitations.

The Minister also underscored the transformative impact of the PM-KUSUM scheme, the world’s largest programme for solarisation of agriculture. To date, 10.4 GW of solar capacity has been installed, over 21.7 lakh solar pumps have been deployed, benefiting more than 21 lakh farmers, leading to substantial reduction in diesel consumption and carbon emissions.

The Minister also made a brief reference to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, highlighting its role in enabling households to access affordable rooftop solar power, reduce electricity bills and move towards energy self-reliance.

A total of 249 beneficiaries of the above schemes from 15 States across the country have been invited to participate in the Republic Day celebrations. The 3 day programme in Delhi has commenced with the interaction with the Hon’ble Minister.

Vande Bharat Emerges as Kashmir’s Winter Lifeline

“Our entire Kashmir package felt recovered in the train ride itself,” say tourists

“Earlier snowfall meant isolation; now rail connectivity is reviving winter tourism,” say stakeholders

TAUSEEF AHMAD

SRINAGAR, Jan 24: As fresh and intense snowfall crippled road and air connectivity to the Kashmir Valley, the Vande Bharat Express has emerged as a dependable lifeline, ensuring uninterrupted access to the region even amid harsh winter conditions. Unlike earlier years, when heavy snowfall often meant prolonged isolation, the Valley this winter has remained connected with the rest of the country through rail—offering rare relief to tourists, locals and stakeholders alike.

For the second consecutive day, the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway remained closed due to snow accumulation and icy conditions, while several flights were cancelled owing to poor visibility. In this scenario, the Vande Bharat Express stood out as the only reliable mode of transport, ferrying passengers safely and comfortably through snowbound landscapes.

Tourists arriving in Kashmir over the past two days described their journey aboard the Vande Bharat as an experience in itself—one that rivalled, and in some cases surpassed, the rest of their travel itinerary.

“Vande Bharat’s journey through Kashmir felt unreal. Everything was wrapped in white and the views were absolutely unforgettable,” said Ajay, a Bengaluru-based tourist, moments after reaching Srinagar.

Another tourist travelling to the Valley echoed similar sentiments, saying the train ride alone justified the entire trip. “Honestly, our whole Kashmir trip package felt recovered in the train journey itself. The comfort, speed and the scenic beauty outside the windows made the ride unforgettable. Even before reaching our hotel, we felt the trip was already worth it,” he said.

Passengers were particularly awestruck as the train crossed some of the world’s most remarkable railway engineering feats. “When the train crossed the Chenab Rail Bridge—the world’s highest railway bridge standing 359 metres above the river—it was breathtaking,” said one tourist. “Snow-covered mountains, frozen streams, pine forests and silent villages passed right outside our windows. It felt like postcard scenes coming alive, and we couldn’t stop filming the entire ride.”

Rakesh Mehta, a tourist from Mumbai, told Kashmir Despatch that the experience was unlike anything he had witnessed before. “It felt like travelling through Switzerland, but this is our own Kashmir. From the window, everything looked magical—white mountains, deep valleys and snowfall following the train. Kashmir truly feels like heaven on earth,” he said.

Neha Sharma from Delhi said the journey itself became the highlight of her winter vacation. “We were worried because flights were uncertain and roads were closed, but the Vande Bharat made travel safe and comfortable. Watching snowfall while crossing high bridges and long tunnels was thrilling. The train ride alone is worth coming to Kashmir in winter,” she said.

Local tourism stakeholders say the impact of the all-weather rail connectivity is already visible. Altad Ahmad, a tourist guide in Gulmarg, said that winters—once considered an off-season due to frequent disruptions—are now witnessing renewed interest.

“Earlier, snowfall meant isolation. Highways would shut down and flights would get cancelled, leaving tourists stranded or forcing them to cancel their plans,” said a Srinagar-based hotelier. “Now, even during heavy snowfall, tourists can still reach the Valley. This has completely changed the winter tourism landscape.”

Railway authorities, meanwhile, have underlined that the Kashmir rail link has been specifically designed to operate under extreme weather conditions, making it a dependable option during harsh winters. Apart from passenger movement, the service also ensures the steady transportation of essential supplies when road and air routes fail.

Officials pointed out that the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat is distinctly different from the other 163 Vande Bharat trains running across the country. “This eight-coach train has been specially built to withstand sub-zero temperatures of up to minus 20 degrees Celsius,” an official said.

Tourists who had previously travelled to Kashmir by road highlighted the stark contrast. “Last year, I visited Kashmir in December by road from Jammu, and the journey was exhausting—it took nearly nine hours,” said a Delhi-based tourist. “This year, travelling by Vande Bharat, it took us just three hours, and the ride was extremely smooth. I would strongly recommend everyone to use this service—not just for the scenic beauty, but for the comfort and hassle-free journey it offers.”

It is pertinent to mention that the Vande Bharat train, inaugurated in June 2025, is equipped with advanced heating systems, fully air-conditioned coaches, automatic doors, onboard catering facilities, bio-toilets and anti-seismic vibration technology. These features ensure passenger safety and comfort while navigating the challenging mountainous terrain of the Kashmir region.

As snowfall continues to paint the Valley white, the Vande Bharat Express is not just moving passengers—it is redefining winter travel to Kashmir, transforming what was once isolation into access, and turning a journey into a destination in itself.

Urges authorities to deploy adequate men and machinery to restore road connectivity on priority

January, 24:

CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, on Saturday urged the government to immediately assess the damage caused to residential houses due to strong winds across Kashmir and compensate families who have suffered losses.

Tarigami said that strong gusts of wind, followed by snowfall in many parts of the Valley, damaged rooftops, power infrastructure and other structures, causing hardship to people, particularly in rural and far off areas. He said a proper assessment of damage must be carried out on the ground so that affected households receive timely relief and compensation.

CPI(M) leader said that snowfall is a blessing and is important from a larger environmental and agricultural perspective. However, he said that the government must ensure that basic services and connectivity are restored promptly so that people do not suffer during harsh winter conditions.

The road connectivity to several villages has been affected due to snowfall, leaving many interior and remote areas cut off. He urged the authorities to deploy adequate men and machinery to clear roads on priority and reconnect villages at the earliest, especially in hilly and far-flung areas where residents face severe difficulties.

He said that electricity supply was affected initially due to strong winds and later disrupted further due to snowfall. He said restoration of power supply is essential during winter and urged the concerned departments to ensure that electricity is restored at the earliest in all affected areas.

The government must respond swiftly and sensitively to the problems faced by people during winter and ensure that relief, restoration of services and connectivity are treated as priority issues to ease public hardship.

Rapid Transit: The consignment was loaded at the Sangrur rail terminal in Punjab on January 21st and reached Anantnag in less than 24 hours, demonstrating unprecedented efficiency in the supply chain.

Overcoming Challenges: Despite a brief delay in unloading yesterday due to inclement weather, the handling operations were successfully completed today.

Impact on the Valley:
This milestone is expected to revolutionize the distribution network in the Kashmir Valley. By transitioning from mini rakes and road transport to full-capacity railway wagons, Railway department ensures:

Cost Efficiency: Significant reduction in overall logistics and freight expenses.

Supply Stability: A faster, more reliable method to maintain buffer stocks in the valley.

Environmental Benefits: Reduced reliance on heavy truck traffic via the national highway.

This successful facilitation serves as a testament to the seamless coordination between the Railways, FCI, and the Jammu & Kashmir administration to ensure the seamless delivery of essential commodities to the public.
