Healing at the Border: Karnah Sees Massive Turnout at Army-Led Cancer Screening Camp

KD NEWS SERVICE

KARNAH-KUPWARA, May 10: A major Cancer Screening and Multi-Speciality Medical Camp was organised at Sub District Hospital Karnah by the Indian Army and District Administration Kupwara in collaboration with Quality Healthcare Hospital, bringing specialised healthcare services to the far-flung border region of Karnah in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The large-scale humanitarian and healthcare initiative witnessed an overwhelming response from local residents, with more than 300 people availing themselves of medical consultations, screening facilities and specialised treatment services during the day-long camp. The initiative aimed at improving access to advanced healthcare facilities for people living in remote and difficult-to-access areas along the Line of Control (LoC), where access to specialised medical care often remains limited.

A distinguished team of four experienced oncologists from Delhi formed the core of the camp’s specialised cancer care programme. The medical experts conducted detailed cancer screening examinations for over 20 patients, many of whom had either reported symptoms requiring evaluation or had been referred for preventive screening.

In addition to fresh screenings, the doctors also examined patients already undergoing treatment for cancer, offering them medical guidance, counselling and follow-up advice regarding their ongoing treatment and recovery.

The camp proved particularly significant for residents who otherwise have to travel long distances to larger cities for specialised consultations. Patients and their families interacted directly with expert doctors, receiving detailed medical advice and reassurance closer to home.

Apart from oncology services, the camp also offered consultations and treatment in multiple medical specialities including Gynaecology, Dentistry, Dermatology and Audiometry. Specialist doctors examined patients suffering from a wide range of ailments and provided immediate medical assistance, prescriptions and guidance for further treatment wherever necessary.

For many villagers from remote areas of Karnah, the camp became a rare opportunity to access quality healthcare facilities without the financial and logistical burden of travelling outside the region.

Women, elderly patients and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses especially benefited from the outreach programme.

The initiative highlighted the continued efforts of the Indian Army and civil administration in extending welfare and public healthcare services to border populations living in geographically challenging areas.

Medical camps of this nature not only strengthen healthcare accessibility but also create awareness regarding early diagnosis and preventive healthcare, particularly in the case of life-threatening diseases such as cancer.
Residents of Karnah expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army, District Administration Kupwara and the organising agencies for conducting the camp and ensuring the availability of specialised medical expertise in the region. Locals described the initiative as a much-needed relief for patients struggling with serious illnesses and appreciated the sustained outreach efforts being undertaken in the border belt.

The camp was widely hailed as a meaningful humanitarian initiative that brought hope, relief and reassurance to hundreds of families, reaffirming the importance of coordinated healthcare outreach programmes in remote and untouched regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

Attempts To Politicise Anti Drug Social Mobilisation Deeply Unfortunate Amid J&K’s Escalating Drug Crisis: BJP

0

Srinagar, May 10: Bharatiya Janata Party Jammu & Kashmir today termed as deeply unfortunate the remarks made by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti questioning the participation of students in anti drug Padh Yatras organised under the Nasha Mukht Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan being spearheaded by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

In a statement issued here, BJP J&K State Spokesperson Danish Bhat said that Jammu & Kashmir is presently facing a serious and expanding drug crisis which has affected lakhs of individuals and families across the region, making broad based social awareness and public participation an absolute necessity rather than a matter of political debate.

He said official estimates indicating substance abuse among more than 13 lakh individuals in Jammu & Kashmir underline the scale and gravity of the challenge confronting society today.

“At a time when parents, teachers and civil society are expressing deep concern over the growing impact of narcotics on the younger generation, any attempt to question or discourage peaceful awareness initiatives aimed at sensitising society is both unfortunate and misplaced,” he said.

Danish Bhat stated that awareness Padh Yatras are intended to strengthen social consciousness against drug abuse and encourage community participation in combating a menace that has penetrated deeply into society. “Drug addiction cannot be addressed through enforcement measures alone. Every successful campaign against substance abuse across the world has relied upon social mobilisation, awareness and community participation, particularly involving the youth,” he added.

The BJP spokesperson said the people of Jammu & Kashmir are widely appreciating the decisive measures being taken under the leadership of Manoj Sinha to dismantle the narcotics network and target the larger drug economy operating within the region. He said strict enforcement action against drug traffickers and properties linked to narcotics has generated confidence among ordinary citizens who for years witnessed the steady expansion of this menace without an adequate institutional response.

“The public sentiment today is strongly in favour of tougher and more sustained action against drug networks because the social consequences of addiction are visible in every district and almost every community of Jammu & Kashmir,” he said.

Danish Bhat further stated that the present situation is also a reflection of prolonged political and administrative failure under successive regional governments which failed to respond to the growing threat of narcotics with the seriousness and urgency it required.

“It is therefore natural for questions to arise when certain regional political parties appear uncomfortable with an aggressive crackdown on the drug economy and the broader social mobilisation taking place against substance abuse. The people of Jammu & Kashmir are themselves asking why those who remained silent during the steady growth of this menace are now attempting to raise doubts over a campaign that has received overwhelming public support,” he said.

The BJP spokesperson asserted that the Nasha Mukht J&K Abhiyaan has evolved into a significant social movement with active support from parents, students, educational institutions and civil society, and reiterated BJP’s full support for every initiative aimed at safeguarding the future of Jammu & Kashmir’s youth from the devastating impact of drug addiction.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will dedicate to the Nation key railway infrastructure projects worth around ₹1,535 crore in Telangana on 10th May 2026, marking another major step towards strengthening rail connectivity, improving operational efficiency and enhancing passenger and freight movement across the region.

These projects form part of Indian Railways’ continued efforts to modernise critical rail corridors, decongest saturated sections and provide faster, safer and more reliable travel experience for passengers.

A major component of the projects includes multiple sections of the Kazipet–Vijayawada multi-tracking project covering 118 km, including the Warangal–Kazipet, Nekonda–Mahabubabad and Errupalem–Dornakal Junction rail sections. The project will benefit key districts including Hanumakonda, Warangal, Mahabubabad and Khammam in Telangana.

The corridor forms an important part of the busy Grand Trunk route, which handles significant passenger and freight traffic connecting northern and southern parts of the country.

The multi-tracking project will substantially enhance line capacity, enabling smoother and faster train operations while reducing congestion on heavily utilised routes. It is expected to improve punctuality of trains, minimise detention of freight services and facilitate more efficient movement of goods across the region.

The project will particularly benefit passengers travelling between Telangana and major destinations across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and northern India by improving reliability, reducing delays and enabling faster transit through the Kazipet–Vijayawada corridor.

The enhanced freight capacity will also support transportation of coal, cement, fertilizers, agricultural produce and industrial goods between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, benefiting local industries, farmers and businesses through faster and more efficient logistics movement.

The Prime Minister will also dedicate the 21 km Kazipet Rail Under Rail Bypass, a strategically important infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion at Kazipet Junction, one of the busiest railway junctions in the region.

The bypass will enable simultaneous train movement towards Hyderabad, Balharshah and Vijayawada, significantly improving operational flexibility and reducing waiting time for trains. The project will reduce operational conflicts and crossing delays at the busy junction, thereby improving punctuality and streamlining train operations.

The bypass will also strengthen connectivity on the important Delhi–Chennai route and improve freight efficiency for long-distance trains across key corridors. Direct train movement without stoppage or routing conflicts at the junction will further enhance operational efficiency and ensure smoother movement of both passenger and freight services.

The project is also expected to improve connectivity for nearby towns and districts by supporting more efficient train scheduling and reducing congestion-related delays.

Together, these railway infrastructure projects reflect Indian Railways’ commitment towards building a high-capacity, future-ready rail network that supports economic growth, improves passenger convenience and strengthens regional connectivity across Telangana and neighbouring states.
