Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge confident of forming govt in Haryana, J&K

0

Bengaluru — All India Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday expressed confidence about his party coming to power in Haryana, and the party along with its alliance partner National Conference forming the government in Jammu and Kashmir.

The results of both the assembly elections will be announced on October 8.

“Earlier too we had said that in Haryana and Jammu Kashmir, the Congress government will be formed. In Jammu and Kashmir, Congress and NC (National Conference) alliance will form the government, and in Haryana Congress government will be formed,” Kharge told reporters here.

Several exit polls have predicted a clear majority for the Congress in Haryana and gave an edge to its alliance with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir, with the regional partner emerging as the single largest party.

Haryana had gone to single phase polls on October 5, while Jammu and Kashmir voted in three phases on September 18, 25 and October 1.

Elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of 10 years and the bifurcation of the state into two union territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh — in 2019.

Responding to a question on the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi demanding caste census at the national level, Kharge said, “We had said it during Parliament election too, after taking views from all states, further action has to be taken.”

Asked whether the much-awaited Socio Economic and Education Survey report, also known as the “caste census” will be implemented in Karnataka, he replied, “Ask the state leaders about it.”

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara had on Sunday said the government has decided to place the caste census report before the Cabinet, where it will be discussed, and further action will be decided.

Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes under its then Chairman K Jayaprakash Hegde on February 29, had submitted the report to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The report was submitted amid objections by certain sections of society and also within the ruling Congress.

Karnataka’s two dominant communities — Vokkaliags and Lingayats — have expressed reservations about the survey, calling it “unscientific”, and have demanded that it be rejected and a fresh survey be conducted. — (PTI)

SC Petition Seeks J&K Statehood Restoration in Two Months

0

SRINAGAR: An application has been submitted to the Supreme Court requesting the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood within two months. The plea, filed by college teacher Zahoor Ahmed Bhat and activist Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, argues that the failure to restore statehood is significantly impacting the rights of citizens in the Valley.

Citing the recent elections in the Valley, the plea, through Advocate Soyaib Quresi, claims that forming the Legislative Assembly before restoring statehood would contravene the principle of federalism, which is part of the Constitution’s basic structure. The petitioner asserts that since the recent assembly elections were conducted peacefully, there would be “no security concerns” should the Supreme Court direct the restoration of statehood within a specific timeframe.

The petitioners argue that converting Jammu Kashmir into two Union Territories has resulted in a diminished form of elected democratic governance, which will be re-established once the Legislative Assembly results are announced. Bhat emphasises that the Valley has historically maintained a federal relationship with the Union of India. Therefore, restoring statehood is crucial for the residents to enjoy autonomy in their identity and contribute meaningfully to the country’s overall development.

The application, filed as a Miscellaneous Application in the disposed matter “In Re: Article 370 of the Constitution,” pertains to the Supreme Court’s prior upholding of the abrogation of Jammu & Kashmir’s special status. In that ruling, the Court did not consider the constitutionality of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019, which transformed J&K into a Union Territory, due to assurances from the Solicitor General regarding the restoration of statehood. The Court directed that “Restoration of statehood shall take place at the earliest and as soon as possible,” without specifying a timeline.

The applicants also highlighted that the peaceful conduct of the Assembly elections indicates no obstacles to restoring statehood. “Therefore, there is no impediment of security concerns, violence or any other disturbances which would hinder or prevent the grant/restoration of the status of Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir as had been assured by the Union of India in the present proceedings,” the application asserts. Hezbollah Rockets Hit Israel’s Haifa, Causing Casualties

0

Hezbollah launched a missile attack on an Israeli military base near Haifa on Sunday evening, causing casualties, according to a statement from the group. The attack was described as a retaliation for Israeli operations targeting civilians in Lebanon. Hezbollah fired a salvo of ‘Fadi 1’ missiles at Carmel Base, located south of Haifa.

The Israeli military responded by activating air defense systems, with some of the projectiles being intercepted. However, several rockets managed to hit Haifa and Tiberias, causing injuries. Israeli emergency services confirmed that at least one person was injured in Tiberias due to the rocket strikes, while eight others were evacuated to Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa for treatment.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions, as the Israeli army has been conducting intense operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon since September 23. This marks a significant escalation in the conflict, with both sides engaging in cross-border attacks.

Hope India will come to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy: PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi

0

Lahore — Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairperson Mohsin Naqvi expressed hope that India will come to the country for the next edition of ICC Champions Trophy, set to take place next year.

Mohsin made this statement during an interaction with the press in Lahore.

Speaking to the press, Naqvi said, “Indian team mujhe puri umeed hai… Abhi tak koi aisi cheej nahi hai jiski wajeh se vo postpone karey ya cancel karey. Toh sari teams aayengi (Team India will come to play the Champions Trophy, all the teams will come),” Naqvi said.

Pakistan has not hosted any major International Cricket Council (ICC) event since the 1996 ODI World Cup, which it co-hosted with India and Sri Lanka. It was supposed to co-host the 2011 edition of the tournament, but their rights were stripped after a terror attack on a touring Sri Lanka side’s bus back in 2009. The tournament was then played in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

India has not travelled to Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup, but Pakistan has been to India on three occasions, for a white-ball series in late December 2012 to January 2013, the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup, which was entirely hosted by India.

During the 2023 WC, Pakistan played two matches each in Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata and the high-voltage match with arch-rivals India was played at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi stadium on October 14.

Notably, Pakistan is currently playing England in a three-match series, with the first Test at Multan starting from today. Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first.

England is at the fourth place in ICC World Test Championship standings with eight wins, seven losses and a draw after series wins against West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Pakistan are eighth in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings after their series loss to Bangladesh at home.

In one year of war, Israel bombed over 40,000 targets in Gaza

0

Jerusalem — In the past year in the Gaza Strip, Israel has bombed more than 40,000 targets, found 4,700 tunnel shafts and destroyed 1,000 rocket launcher sites, the military said on Monday’s one-year anniversary of the Hamas-led militant attacks that triggered Israel’s assault on the enclave.

Tallying troops whose names it received permission to publish, Israel’s military said 726 Israeli soldiers had been killed since Oct. 7, 2023. Of those, 380 died in the Oct. 7 attacks and 346 in Gaza combat starting Oct. 27, 2023.

Injured troops numbered 4,576 since that date. Fifty-six soldiers died as a result of operational accidents, which the military did not define.

In data to mark the Oct. 7 anniversary, the Israeli military said it enlisted 300,000 reservists since the start of the war – 82% men and 18% women and nearly half of them aged 20 to 29.

Since the start of the war, 13,200 rockets were fired into Israel from Gaza. Another 12,400 were fired from Lebanon, while 60 came from Syria, 180 from Yemen and 400 from Iran, the military said.

It said it killed more than 800 “terrorists” in Lebanon, where 4,900 targets have been struck from the air along with about 6,000 ground targets. Over the past year, Israel arrested more than 5,000 suspects in the West Bank and Jordan Valley.

The military said it killed eight Gaza militant brigade commanders, about 30 battalion commanders and 165 company commanders over the past year.

The war in Gaza was triggered when Palestinian Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 as hostages, according to Israeli tallies. More than 100 hostages remain held by Hamas.

Israel’s subsequent military assault on Gaza has killed nearly 42,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. — (Reuters)

“Ready to talk with anyone to throw BJP out of power corridor,” says Congress leader Tariq Hameed Karra

0

Jammu — Congress candidate from Central Shalteng assembly seat Tariq Hameed Karra said on Sunday that they are ready to hold dialogues with any party and people who are on the same page to throw Bharatiya Janata Party out of the “power corridor” in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Indian National Congress has said that we are ready to hold a dialogue and associate with all those parties and people who are ready to throw BJP out of the power corridor…Everyone is welcome if they are on the same page and are like-minded,” he told ANI.

He also said that if Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) Chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad is ready to be on the same page regarding the ideology with Congress, then he is welcome to join the alliance.

“If today Ghulam Nabi Azad’s ideologies match with Congress and if he accepts the leadership and guiding principles of Congress, then he is welcomed in this pious programme. If any independent leader or political party will be on the same page in keeping the BJP out of power, then our doors are open for them. As of now, he (Ghulam Nabi Azad) is not on the same page but if he comes on the same page, it is for him to decide,” he said.

He further raised the issue of the nomination of 5 MLAs in the assembly which will be nominated by the Lieutenant Governor (LG), and said that the LG of a union territory should not have such “arbitrary powers.”

He told ANI, “The other thing was that we have been thinking about the nomination of the 5 MLAs. It was discussed and agreed that if the President of India doesn’t have the arbitrary powers to nominate a person. Because the Constitution says that the President of India can nominate anyone with the advice and guidance of the government, then how come the LG of a UT can have those arbitrary powers?”
He also talked about the problems faced by Congress candidates, alleging that liquor and money were being transported across the region during the election, but the Congress candidates did not get any help from the administration when complaints were raised.

“There was a consensus that they had to face a large number of complaints. Liquor, money and other things were being transported. They (candidates) say that they had been conveying these complaints to the administration. But, there was no cooperation from their side,” he added. — (ANI)

0

Srinagar — Excuding confidence that the Congress-NC alliance would be coming to power in Jammu and Kashmir with a “majority,” National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Sunday said that it is a “great thing” that People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is ready to join them.

When asked about the PDP leader’s remarks that the party is ready to join the Congress-NC alliance to keep BJP out of power, he told ANI, “Congratulations to them, this is a great thing, we are all on the same track, nafrat ko hume khatam karna hai, aur Jammu and Kashmir ko ikhate rakhna hai (we need to end the hatred, and keep Jammu and Kashmir united).”

Farooq Abdullah, however, refused to comment on the exit polls and said that on October 8, when the counting is due for the assembly polls, the results will be in front of all.

“On October 8 all the results would be in front of you, the boxes will be opened and we would know who stands where. But I do know this much that the Congress-NC alliance would be forming the government with a majority,” he said.

PDP is confident that it will be an indispensable and important part of the secular government that will form in J&K. PDP will have an important role in forming any secular government. We had said that we are ready to take any step to save the identity of Kashmir but for this, it is important that we formulate a secular government, a government against BJP not with them.”

JK Polls : Three-Tier Security Arrangements In Place At Counting Centres

0

SRINAGAR, Oct 6: Stringent security arrangements have been put in place at all district headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir for the counting of votes on Tuesday for the 90-member assembly, paving way for first elected Government in the Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370 five years ago.

A three-tier security set up has been put in place at all the 20 counting centres across Jammu and Kashmir where the votes will be counted on Tuesday, said an official of the Election Commission.

The first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since 2014 was held over three phases with 24 seats going to polls in the first phase on September 18. The second phase of polling was held on September 18 in which 26 seats went to polls while the polling for remaining 40 seats was held on October 1.

“Only authorized counting agents of the contesting candidates and staff posted on counting duty will be allowed inside the counting halls,” the official said.
He said the tally of votes for each candidate will be announced after every round of counting on the public address system outside the counting halls.

The first ever polls in Jammu and Kashmir after it was made a Union Territory witnessed a voter turnout of 63.45 per cent, less than the 65.52 percent recorded in the 2014 assembly elections.

The fate of 873 candidates, vying for a seat in the 90-member house, has been sealed and it will be known by Tuesday evening.

The prominent among those in the fray are National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who is contesting from Budgam and Ganderbal segments; Sajad Gani Lone of People’s Conference who is contesting from Handwara and Kupwara seats; Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hamid Karra, who is a candidate from Batamaloo seat; and BJP state president Ravindra Raina, who is contesting from Nowshera seat.

The other notable contestants are AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir (Dooru), PDP leaders Waheed Para (Pulwama), Iltija Mufti (Bijbehara), Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari (Chanapora), CPI(M) veteran Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami (Kulgam) and former deputy chief ministers Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Tara Chand.

The exit polls, which came out on Saturday, have put the National Conference-Congress alliance in the pole position with the regional party getting the lion’s share of the seats.

The BJP is expected to slightly improve on its tally of 25 seats which it had won in the 2014 assembly polls while the PDP, which had won 28 seats in the polls held 10 years ago, is predicted to win less than 10 seats this time.

The pollsters have not given much of a chance to the new and emerging parties like the People’s Conference, Apni Party, Democratic Azad Party of Ghulam Nabi Azad and Awami Ittehad Party of Lok Sabha member Sheikh Abdul Rashid. These parties along with independents are expected to win around 10 seats. (Agencies)
