India withdrew request for financing Amaravati project: World Bank

0

Amaravati, July 21 The World Bank, which has dropped its $300 million commitment for the new Andhra Pradesh capital last week, clarified on Sunday that the Indian government withdrew its request to finance the project.

The World Bank, in a statement on its website, said the India on July 15 withdrew its request to the World Bank for financing the proposed Amaravati Sustainable Infrastructure and Institutional Development Project.

“The World Bank”s Board of Executive Directors has been informed that the proposed project is no longer under preparation following the government”s decision,” said the statement.

It, however, said that it continues to support Andhra Pradesh with over $1 billion programme that covers the health, agriculture, energy and disaster management sectors. This includes the new $328 million support to the state”s health sector signed with the state government on June 27.

“The World Bank has had a long and productive partnership with the state of Andhra Pradesh. The state has pioneered some remarkable development innovations, such as the women”s self-help group movement, that other countries have learned from. The World Bank is proud to have collaborated on these programmes, and to have helped carry these examples to the rest of the world,” it said.

“As the new government sets its development priorities, we stand ready to provide whatever support the state and the Government of India might request,” the World Bank added.

The World Bank website on July 18 had showed the status of Amaravati Sustainable Infrastructure and Institutional Development Project as “dropped”.

The total project cost was $715 million and the state government in 2016 had sought the entire funding from the World Bank. However, it had committed $300 million.

It was said that the World Bank took the decision following complaint by local farmers and people”s organisations that development of Amaravati will affect their livelihood and impact the environment.

The development, which came one-and-half month after the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) stormed to power in the state, triggered blame game between the ruling party and opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

TDP president and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the complaints lodged by the YSRCP with World Bank while in opposition led to the World Bank dropping the project.

However, YSRCP claimed that it was the result of corruption indulged in by the previous TDP government.

Happy how my life has shaped up in India: Sunny Leone

0

Mumbai: From hosting a youth show on television to venturing into new business to mothering three children to working in Bollywood films, Sunny Leone has been super busy over the past seven months. Each of her projects and relationships is special, she says, and so, driven by passion, she is ready for all the sleepless nights.

“I have no choice. I have to make time because these are all the things I want to do in life. I’m very passionate about the projects I’m working in, so I fit it everything accordingly. Whether it’s in the middle of the night, early in the morning or in the middle of the day, everything that needs my attention has to get it,” Sunny told IANS.

In 2017, Sunny, along with husband Daniel Weber adopted a baby girl. They named her Nisha. She has started going to playschool now, and the couple has started a new branch of their playschool chain, D’ Art Fusion, in Juhu for their daughter and other kids.
Education, she reckons, is a different world – far removed from the business of entertainment.

“Education helps people know the basics of life, but I know a lot of people who don’t have a degree or never finished school and yet are very successful. I am one of them,” she said.

“I strove for what I wanted as a businessperson. I was passionate about the stuff I wanted to do and I worked hard, and that’s why I am where I am right now,” added the ‘Baby Doll’ famed actress.
She is proud of her daughter. “My daughter goes to an amazing school that offers her so many different things, and I’m happy about that. I believe in every country there are different levels of education for children, and it depends on whether they are able to get it or not,” said the 38-year-old actress, who is also the mother of twin boys, Asher and Noah.

Sunny’s stint in the Indian film industry began in 2011 as a participant on the reality TV show “Bigg Boss”. Soon, she was balancing her career acting in films such as “Jism 2” and “Ragini MMS 2”, and shaking a leg to hit dance numbers such as “Pink Lips”, “Laila”, “Piya More”, and “Trippy Trippy”.

Sunny’s latest item dance is in the upcoming film “Arjun Patiala”.
She has also been co-hosting the show “MTV Splitsvilla” with Rannivijay Singh over the past five seasons.

“MTV Splitsvilla”, which has young participants and aims at the youth audience, has been a learning process for Sunny.

“What I’ve noticed after hosting ‘Splitsvilla’ for so long is that most young people have the same concerns. Only the periphery changes — like how we meet people, or how things are done now. Digital dating and dating apps, for instance, have changed how young people meet,” she said.
“The primary concerns, though, remain the same. It is always about falling in love or getting to know each other,” added Sunny.

It has been over seven years that Sunny, the Canadian-born Indian-American former adult movie star, arrived in India and made Mumbai her home. With several films, superhit dances, cosmetic and perfume brands, a skincare line, and a strong presence in the social media, Sunny has bolstered a huge following in India.

The actress said she has no plan to leave her newfound homeland, where she has not only received applause for her screen efforts, but has also seen growing business opportunities.
I think India is one of the most fast-paced countries in the world right now when it comes to doing business. If you have a dream and you want to do something, then you can achieve it. I see myself as an example of that, as I have been able to achieve whatever I wanted to so far. I’d have sleepless nights doing so many things I’m passionate about, but I am happy with the way everything has shaped up for me in India,” she says.

“It’s been an amazing journey so far. It’s panned out beyond everything I ever expected, and I’m very happy with my life right now,” said Sunny, adding: “I don’t see myself leaving anytime soon or doing something else.”

With his country in financial doldrums, Khan made it a point to travel by a commercial flight, Qatar Airways, instead of a private jet, to cut down expenses.

Social media was awash with speculation that Khan had been snubbed by the US administration, and that the Pakistani government had offered to pay $250,000 for the State Department to arrange an official welcome/protocol of the visiting Pakistani premier, but it was refused.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was at the airport to receive Khan and also accompanied him on the metro ride.

Acting Chief of Protocol, Mary-Kate Fisher, who had welcomed the Pakistan Prime Minister at the airport, accompanied him on the metro ride.

The State Department later said the Acting Chief of Protocol had received the visiting Prime Minister, “as is standard for an Official Working Visit to the White House”.

Imran Khan, who is staying at the official residence of the Pakistani Ambassador to the US, Asad Majeed Khan, is to meet US President Donald Trump on July 22.

Khan, who was lustily greeted by members of the Pakistani expatriate community, later met with the Pakistani business community.

During his three-day visit, Khan is also to meet IMF acting chief David Lipton and World Bank President David Malpass.

Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa and the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) are accompanying Khan to the US.

The Pakistan Embassy in Washington has hired the services of top lobbying firm Holland & Knight to help advance the country”s interests in the US.

According to the White House, Khan”s visit will focus on strengthening cooperation between Washington and Islamabad to bring peace, stability and economic prosperity to a region that has seen far too much conflict.

I Was Always An Outsider In NC: G N Ratanpuri

0

Former Member of Parliament G N Ratanpuri has said that he was always an outsider in the National Conference.

“I was on the fence, never allowed to set second foot in the party, but all through these ten years I forcefully voiced my opinion and the concerns of common Kashmiri despite the attempts to throttle me,” he said in a statement.

He lamented that his “audacity” to confront the “high command” may have encouraged a few young leaders to occasionally speak out, but the seniors whom he once idolised chose to remain deaf, dumb and blind.

He said that Omar Abdullah feels proud and delighted in expressing his grandfather as a leader who made people to follow him and who valued his own opinion more than the sentiments and aspirations of his people.

“Omer Abdullah on December 05, 2013 while addressing a gathering on his grandfather’s mazar narrated that how Sheikh Sahib took his people to India through accession in 1947 and through the accord in 1975 against their will, but successfully got their post facto approval because he believed that India was better an option than Pakistan or Azadi. I used to stress upon the leadership to reassure the youth who see no future in India and sacrifice their lives for a dream, tell them that you have taken them to India, India continues to be the best choice and you will protect their honor, their life and their interests,” said Ratanpuri.

According to him, the Party would generally discuss nothing beyond tricks and schemes to win the elections. He said that till the counting day of 17th Lok Sabha elections Dr. Farooq Abdullah called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a dictator, even Hitler. While in Modi’s BJP we hear some voices of dissent, the National Conference lacks the spirit to tolerate even one single voice of dissent.

About his future plans, he quipped, “wait and watch.”
