Madras high court directs Centre to ban downloading of TikTok app, asks media not to telecast videos made with it

0

MADURAI: The Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Wednesday issued an interim direction to the central government to prohibit downloading of TikTok mobile app. The court observed that pornography and inappropriate contents are made available through mobile applications like TikTok.

A division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice S S Sundar also issued directions prohibiting media from telecasting videos made with TikTok.

“The government has to answer whether union of India will enact a statute, like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, enacted by the United states of America to prevent children from becoming cyber victims,” the court said.

The court directions were in response to a petition which sought a ban on the app stating that it encouraged disturbing content and degrades culture.
In February, Tamil Nadu information technology minister M Manikandan said the state would write to the Centre to push for banning the app, an opinion endorsed by alliance partner Dr S Ramadoss of the PMK.

Facebook, WhatsApp become fake news factories in India

0

Barely a week away from when the world’s largest democracy goes to polls, the fake news factories on Facebook and its owned WhatsApp have become active like never before as the social media giant scramble for solutions which are few and far between.

The game on Facebook is different from other social media platforms as Pages, Groups and accounts have been renamed to push the election agenda as per the demand coming from the political quarters.

According to social media experts, renaming the Facebook Pages or Groups to promote political campaigns and influence voters have become common and the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven algorithms are not sufficient to handle such a huge volume in a country where Facebook has over 30 crore users and WhatsApp another 30 crore monthly.

“There are over 200 Facebook Groups and Pages with more than one lakh followers which are currently influencing the group members and followers with biased political content,” leading social media expert Anoop Mishra told IANS.

There are fake profile Pages created by fans of journalists like Ravish Kumar (“I Support Ravish Kumar” with over 18 lakh followers) and Punya Prasun Bajpai (“Prasoon Vajpaaye Fans” with over 10 lakh followers) being used to push a political agenda.

There are several such examples where people who joined Facebook renamed their Pages, Groups and accounts later, only to use it for spreading their political agenda.

Despite Facebook’s efforts, such misinformation is thriving and is only going to reach mammoth levels as the first phase of voting begins from April 11.

“For the social media players, India is a huge market and they want to grow… On the other hand, they have consistently failed to stop the spread of fake news and propaganda on their platforms,” Pavan Duggal, the nation’s leading cyber law expert, told IANS.

The pressure on social media platforms is enormous with the Indian government now formulating new IT guidelines where they have to remove within 24 hours any unlawful content that can affect the “sovereignty and integrity of India”.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp is another fake news factory where more than 87,000 groups are targeting millions with political messaging.

“From fake statistics related to various government policies to news promoting regional violence, manipulated political news, government scams, historical myths, propaganda to patriotism and Hindu nationalism — WhatsApp has it all in the election season,” Mishra had said earlier.

The failure to stem fake news is evident from the recent statements from CEO mark Zuckerberg. In an interview with RTE News on Tuesday, he said Facebook cannot yet guarantee that it can stop foreign actors that are trying to interfere in the upcoming European Parliament elections in May.

Facebook first came under the scanner of policymakers around the world after allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential elections surfaced.

In India, Facebook has hit on several fake Pages and accounts linked to Congress as well as the BJP but the task at hand is humongous.

On the social media platform, “some of the Pages and Groups with massive followings are directly in touch with the IT cells of the political parties”, claimed Mishra.

The purpose, he added, is to connect and influence the voters with their half-baked and misleading content.

Traffic Barred From J&K National Highway 2 Days A Week, Sparks Uproar

0

In the aftermath of the Pulwama suicide bombing that left 40 CRPF personnel killed, the Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday decided to halt civilian traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway for two days in a week.

The order attracted severe criticism from the people and political leaders, including the BJP, which termed it against civilians as this was the first time that the government had decided to stop civilian traffic on the national highway.

The government spokesperson said in view of the large movement of security forces on the national highway during the Lok Sabha elections and the associated possibility of any fidayeen attack on security forces’ convoys, the state government had notified specific days in a week for the movement of forces between Srinagar and Jammu.

“During these days, no civilian traffic would be allowed on the National Highway. To mitigate the inconvenience to civilians by this move, the government has notified two dedicated days in a week (Sunday & Wednesday) exclusively for the movement of Security Forces Convoys and there would be a complete ban on civilian traffic on the National Highway during these two days from 4 am to 5 pm,” reads the order.

According to the new order, the prohibition would be from Baramulla through Srinagar, Qazigund, Jawahar-Tunnel, Banihal, and Ramban till Udhampur.

“In the event of any requirement for local traffic movement for any emergency or for other purposes, the local administration and police would evolve necessary procedures for this as is done during curfew days. These restrictions would remain in force till 31st May 2019,” the order said.

Former chief minister and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah called the move unfriendly and said, “Patients will not be able to reach hospitals, students will be deprived access to schools, employees won’t be able to reach work and the list goes on and on. There has to be a better, less people unfriendly way of protecting forces using the highway.”

He said security forces should use special trains for travel, “I’ve made this suggestion before and in the light of today’s highway closure order, I feel the need to repeat it – why can’t the forces travel between Banihal and Baramulla by special trains? Quicker, safer and more comfortable for the security forces,” Omar tweeted.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress president Ghulam Ahmad Mir called it an inhuman decision by the government. “Stopping the entire traffic on the national highway is a big human rights violation. The civilians will face a lot of trouble and the government should rethink this as it will lead to a crisis.”

Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, “Last I checked, we were a democracy. But this sounds like a diktat of martial law. After bringing Kashmir to the brink, the administration is adamant on ensuring collective punishment for Kashmiris.”

BJP state spokesperson Altaf Thakur said the order was against civilians. “This is a completely unjustified order aimed to create problems for civilians and should be revoked. Stopping movement of civilian traffic on the national highway is unthinkable and should be revoked.” He said it was true there were security concerns but not at the cost of civilians.

PDP youth president Waheed ur Rehman Parra said this order would only create problems for civilians. “The order should be revoked as it has been devised in haste.”

Peoples Conference chairman Sajjad Lone reacting to the order said that in the civilized world military needs would always be subservient to civil needs. “This certainly will be a first of its kind order and will have disastrous social political and economic consequences. The government should not carve a military identity for itself,” he said.(HT)

Omar should not forget that Sheikh Abdullah surrendered everything, says Rashid

Srinagar: Appealing to the masses to vote for Awami Itehad Party (AIP) cutting across party lines, AIP Parliamentary candidate from North Kashmir Abdul Rashid has said that Omer Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and Sajad Lone have conceded their defeat and are now busy in playing dirty politics and trying to do everything to stab masses again.

While addressing more than a dozen rallies in Chack Sari, Chukar, Mulgam, Lolpora, Kunzar, Aubur, Karhama, Gulmarg assembly segment today Rashid said that Omer Abdullah ‘should feel ashamed’ for talking about restoration of autonomy and must understand that he is making a laughing stock of himself by talking about restoration of post of Prime Minister and President.

Rashid said, “May Omer Abdullah answer, has he the moral authority to talk about the same autonomy which late Sheikh Sahab surrendered and preferred to become Chief Minister without being member of any house and with the support of those whom he would call gutter worms and ask for their social boycott.”

“Had NC been sincere the least thing Indra Abdullah accord would have yielded would have been restoration of autonomy but unfortunately late Sheikh Sahab surrendered everything to earn fortunes for his near and dear ones,” he aded.

He also said that before talking about Autonomy Omer Abdullah should answer why his party couldn’t do it from 1996 to 2002 and then why didn’t the agenda of autonomy moved even an inch when NC entered into collation with congress in 2008.

“Whenever there are elections NC’s only slogan in autonomy and nothing else,” said Rashid and accused NC of diluting the real Kashmir cause.

He said that not only Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat were hanged in NC’s regime but the “shameless party could not get back even mortal remains of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat.”

Rashid reminded NC how it got “resolution seeking clemency for Afzal Guru sabotaged through Mohammad Akbar Lone who today tries to exploit sentiments of masses just to gain votes”.

Rashid also lashed out at Mehbooba Mufti for bringing morale of Kashmiris down by handing them over to Sangh Parivar after its ‘dirty’ alliance with BJP.
