India loses hosting rights of Davis cup, Fed cup due to closure of Pakistan air space

0

India has the lost hosting rights of the junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup, following Pakistan’s closure of it’s air space in the aftermath of the Balakot.

A total of 16 Under-16 Davis Cup teams, including Pakistan, were to travel to India for the annual competition, often dubbed as the World Cup of tennis

The junior Davis Cup was to be held at the DLTA complex from April 8-13 while the Fed cup matches were scheduled from April 15-20.

“Pakistan’s air space was locked down at that time and airports (in India) were also on high alert. No one knew for how long the uncertain situation will prevail. So, a consensus emerged that it’s best to shift the venue and India could host tournaments in future,” a highly-placed source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Both the competitions will now be held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The source said logistics became a big issue for almost all the participating countries.

“Since the air space was locked, the flights had to take a detour, which meant increase in cost and more travel time. For instance, Kazakhstan would have taken three-four extra hours to reach New Delhi in the prevailing situation.

“So there was a discussion among the International Tennis Federation Federation (ITF), hosts All India Tennis Association (AITA), Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) and a few other stake-holders and it was decided that for the time being, it was prudent to shift the venue.

“It’s not that India is not a secure place but due to the uncertainty caused by the tension between the two neighbours, everyone felt that it’s a fair call to take the tournament somewhere else,” said the source, privy to the developments.

However, another official, who did not wish to be named, said that AITA has actually saved itself from trouble by agreeing to a change in venue because if the tournament remained in New Delhi, the federation had to plead with the government for the visa approval of the Pakistan contingent.

“If the venue was not changed, AITA had to ensure that Pakistan athletes are provided visas. And in prevailing situation, no one can give that guarantee. So it’s wise decision by AITA to agree to the arrangement,” the official said.

When the ITF was approached for a comment, an official said, “I would like to inform you that the host nation decided to change the official venue to Bangkok. We were contacted by the ATF of (sic) the venue change for the Asia/Oceania final qualifying event.”

When the All India Tennis Association was asked about it, Secretary General Hironmoy Chatterjee claimed that AITA failed to raise funds for the tournament.

“Raising funds for tennis tournaments is very difficult in this country. We had recently hosted the Davis Cup in Kolkata and now we are short of funds. The government also does not help so we informed the ITF that we can’t host it,” Mr. Chatterjee said.

Asked why didn’t AITA factor all this when the events were allotted by the ITF, Mr. Chatterjee said, “we were hoping to arrange funds at that time.”

“You have to provide hospitality for these events. The stay, food, travel, everything has to be arranged for all players and officials. It’s a lot of money.”

It is learnt that it would have cost AITA about ₹50 lakh to host the tournament and a part of the expenses would have been borne by the ITF.

Kashmiri teacher’s custodial killing: ‘His killers should die the same way’

Kaisar Andrab

Dusk had slipped in. Residents of Awantipora area of Pulwama were about to start their day; mobile phones buzzed with the rumors of the custodial killing of Rizwan Asad Pandit, who was picked by the government forces only a day ago from his home. He had turned 29 only a day ago.

On 17 March, sitting together after dinner, the family was excited, and up with plans, for a newly constructed house. Soon, everyone started making the bed; the fall of the night was excused by heavy knocks on the door. The knocks, rhythm of beats, were not normal. Mubashir Asad, elder to Mr. Pandit, went to downstairs to check the knocks.

“It was government forces, wearing fatigue, asking me about Rizwan,” said Mr. Mubashir.

Finding government forces in the vicinity made family members fearful; a shiver ran down in their spine. Soon, as it happened, they locked all family members in a room and asked Mr. Mubashir to accompany them for search.

“They took me to our newly constructed house and searched. On finding nothing, they asked Rizwan to come along,” Mr. Mubashir added. Seeing government forces, accompanied by the local police station officers, in the courtyard made Mr. Pandit’s mother, Haneefa Bano, impatient.

Looking at him being taken away, Ms. Bano cried to release him. “Among the police officers, one policeman said, ‘Mother! Go inside, we will release him soon.’”

“I can see your glimpse before my eyes. Oh! my son, where are you?”

As family members resisted the act of taking him by government forces, one of the police officer placed the gun on Mr. Mubashir chest, “and warned me from moving forward.” As per the family’s allegation, they also took all the mobile phones from the house, including Mr. Mubashir’s laptop.

Sitting on the balcony of her house amid female mourners, Ms. Bano recalls the last words of forces while leaving from the house: “We will kill you all if you made any shouts.”

The night went restless. They awaited the sun and went to the local police station located a few meters away from Mr. Pandit’s house. “They (police) told us that he has been taken to Srinagar for questioning by cargo camp,” said Mr. Mubashir. “But they martyred him inside the custody.”

The new-age media served the purpose — the news of his death reached his home via the internet. “This is a heinous crime. When we contacted them for confirming this, they told us that he has been shifted to the hospital due to some injuries,” said Mr. Mubashir.

According to the family members, Mr. Pandit was booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) on 16 August 2018. “The case was quashed by the court, but they kept him under custody for almost five months. Now, he was living a normal life and moving on with his work,” adds Mr, Mudashir.

A favorite teacher whose death is unbelievable for his students

Mr. Pandit was popular in his locality for his teaching practice, seemed to be a kind heart, was a Master in Chemistry, had done B.Ed, and was planning to go for Ph.D. from the Islamic University of Science and Technology.

“I was in my coaching center when I came to know about it. I still can’t believe that Rizwan sir is no more,” sighed Irshad Javaid, a 12-grade student, standing on the wall of Mr. Pandit’s house.

Many students had come to catch the last glimpse of their teacher. They remember the summers they spent together — learning and laughing.

“We have no words to express how we feel over his death,” said a group of students, wearing uniforms of their school, Sabir Abdullah Public School (SAPS) where Mr. Pandit held the position of principal, and that too, youngest in the area.

Family demands justice; and war to end

“We will not go there to take his dead body. They picked him from our house and we want them to return him home,” said Mr. Mubashir.

Adding to it, he exclaimed that those who are involved in his killing should be brought before the court. “They should be announced to death the same way they killed my brother. This is my only demand.”

But, in the meantime, he also states that it is not possible in a state like Kashmir; “There are endless similar cases pending in the court, awaiting justice; while it is just a myth,” he said.

“This is the reason young boys are choosing an unlawful path,” said Insha Jan, a third-year student, sitting next to Mr. Pandit’s mother, wiping her tears. “Your sister will die after you, Oh! My brother, I will give my life for the scars you have on your body.”

PM destroyed 1 crore jobs in 2018: Rahul Gandhi

0

Imphal, Mar 20 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of destroying 1 crore jobs in 2018 alone despite promising to create 2 crore jobs annually.

Addressing a public rally in the Manipur capital, Gandhi said the job losses under the Modi government were to the tune of 30,000 per day through 2018.

“In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi destroyed 1 crore jobs in the country. This is the scale of his incompetence. It is absurd and ridiculous that the PM promises giving 2 crore jobs,” Gandhi alleged.

Slamming the Centre’s demonetisation move of 2016, Gandhi said it shattered people’s lives.

“One fine morning, he (Modi) got up and decided to carry out demonetisation. Is this a joke? Destroying people’s lives,” he said.

Gandhi claimed that whenever the prime minister visited Manipur, he “insulted your culture, your history”.

“His (party) president (Amit Shah) says Citizenship Amendment Bill will be imposed on the people of Manipur and the Northeast. These people are attacking your culture. We did not allow the bill to pass. The Congress will defend your culture and the bill will not be passed,” he told a huge gathering here.

Gandhi alleged Modi did not match words with action when he said “don’t look east but act east”.

He sought to know what action the Centre has taken to make the Northeast a bridge between Southeast Asia and India.

Kashmir receives fresh spell of snowfall, heavy rain

0

Srinagar, Mar 20 (PTI) Kashmir, including Srinagar city, Wednesday received a fresh spell of snowfall– a rare occurrence in the month of March in recent years– as overnight rainfall caused water logging in many parts of the capital.

Heavy rainfall in plains and snowfall in higher reaches began during the night and continued till around noon of Wednesday, a MET department official said.

He said Srinagar also received moderate snowfall for nearly two hours.

The rains and snowfall led to accumulation of water on many roads while low lying areas in the city were inundated.

The administration used mobile pumps to drain the excess water accumulated on the city roads especially in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and surrounding areas.

The downpour also caused the mercury to fall, leading to winter-like chill in the Valley.

Light to moderate rainfall has been forecast in the valley over the next six days.

Cong, NC finalise alliance in Jammu and Kashmir for LS poll

0

New Delhi: The Congress and the National Conference Wednesday announced an alliance in Jammu and Kashmir for the Lok Sabha polls, saying it is in national interest and will help strengthen secular forces.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and NC patron Farooq Abdullah jointly told the media while the Congress will contest the Jammu and Udhampur Lok Sabha seats, National Conference will fight from Srinagar.

There will be a “friendly contest” between the two parties on the Anantnag and Baramulla seats, they said.

Abdullah said the two parties are also discussing an arrangement for the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat. The state sends six MPs to Lok Sabha.

“The alliance has been finalised in national interest and will strengthen the secular forces in J&K as the state faces threat from Pakistan,” Azad told reporters.

“Live and let live. This is the best decision taken in national interest. If either the Congress or National Conference wins, it is a win-win situation for both,” he said.

Azad said the tie-up will ensure there is no division of secular votes and BJP doesn’t benefit.

He said all Congress leaders will also campaign for Abdullah, who will be the joint candidate from the Srinagar Parliamentary seat, which he currently represents.(PTI)

PM should stop thinking people are fools, they see through everything: Priyanka Gandhi

0

Mirzapur (UP), Mar 20 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi should stop thinking that people are fools and understand that they see through everything, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said Wednesday.

The Congress leader, who is incharge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, is on a three-day boat journey down the Ganga, meeting people living on the banks of the holy river as part of her outreach ahead of the general election beginning on April 11.

“The prime minister has attacked every institution in this country for the last five years, including the institution of which all of you are a part,” Priyanka Gandhi told reporters.

“So I think the PM should stop thinking that people are fools and understand that they see through all this,” she added.

The Congress general secretary went on to say that she is not afraid of being “harassed”.

“Even if anything is done, and we are harassed, we will not feel afraid. We will continue our fight against them. The more we are harassed, the stronger will be our fight,” she said.

Speaking at a ‘chaupal’ near a temple in the city late last evening, Gandhi blamed the Modi government for “not doing anything” for the development of the country.

“This government has given only lollipops,” she charged.

She said politics should be done for the development of the country.

Talking about employment created during the Congress-led dispensation, she said, “The Congress government had given the biggest employment guarantee programme MGNREGA.”

But under the BJP government, she alleged, machines were replacing labourers.

“If the Congress is voted to power, it would work for farmers and the poor,” she asserted.
