India’s Anti-Muslim Bigots Celebrate New Zealand Terror Attack

0

By Shiekh Zakeer Hussain

As the world mourns the deadly terror attacks on two mosques in New Zealand, that killed at least 49 people, anti-Muslim bigots in India are celebrating the shooting on social media.

49 people, including children and women, were killed in Friday’s attacks targeting the Al Noor and Linwood mosques in New Zealand’s worst ever terror attack. The terrorist, 28-year-old Australian, identified as Brenton Harrison Tarrant livestreamed his attack on Facebook, as he mercilessly gunned down innocent lives inside the mosques.

India’s right wing hate mongers have hailed the dastardly terrorist attack against Muslim worshippers as a ‘well deserved lesson’, and have praised the terrorist who carried out the attack as a ‘brave man’.

Posting her reaction to the attack, one Ayushi Chauhan commented that, “New Zealand lost 49 future terrorists”, in a mocking reference to the 49 Muslims killed.

Facebook and Twitter in India were filled with hateful comments against Muslims, with many praising the terrorist as a ‘hero’ for killing Muslims.

A rising tide of venomous speech and attacks on Muslims is surging through India, that is tacitly encouraged by the country’s anti-Muslim political leadership.

Muslims are systematically demonised as terrorists sympathisers, both by the political establishment and the country’s mainstream media, fostering widespread social legitimisation of anti-Muslim prejudice, hate speech and hate crimes.

Explained: J&K’s uniquely vulnerable Special Police Officials

0

The killing of Jammu and Kashmir Special Police Official (SPO) Khushboo Jan in her village in Vehil, Shopian, continues the trend, seen over the last several months, of militants specifically targeting this group of contractual employees who work with the regular police force in the state.

Eight SPOs were killed by militants in 2018, taking the total number of these officials killed in counter-insurgency operations and militant attacks since 1996 to over 500. As fear grew among the SPOs, a trend of resignations was seen, especially in the four South Kashmir districts of Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam and Anantnag.

Recruitment

In 1996, when Farooq Abdullah’s National Conference government was in power, SPOs were first recruited to join the fight against militancy. They were offered Rs 3,000 a month, and were told they would be absorbed in the regular police force after three years if their performance in counter-insurgency operations was “excellent”.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police Act says an SPO may be appointed “when it shall appear that any unlawful assembly or riot or disturbance of peace has taken place or may be reasonably apprehended and that the police force ordinarily employed for preserving the peace is not sufficient…”
Unlike the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the salaries of SPOs are budgeted under the Union Home Ministry’s Security Related Expenditure. SPOs used to be appointed directly by Superintendents of Police without any screening; however, following the massive protests after the 2016 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, the Union Home Ministry announced that 10,000 SPOs would be recruited through District Level Screening Committees headed by Deputy Commissioners.

Eligibility

Men and women between the ages of 18 and 28 who have cleared Class 10 can apply. The physical test eligibility is for men to run 1,600 m in 6 minutes and 15 seconds, and for women, it is at least 1,000 m in that same time.
Upon recruitment, men are deployed in both counter-insurgency and law and order duties, while women SPOs are deployed for law and order. The killing of Khushboo Jan is a rare attack on a woman SPO, even though they too, had begun to face threats from militants from last year onward.
Vulnerability.

The 30,000-strong SPO cadre is an important, if inadequately acknowledged, force-multiplier for the 90,000-strong regular Jammu and Kashmir Police. However, even after a revision of salaries in September last year, SPOs with less than five years in the job get a meager Rs 6,000 per month. Those who have put in 5-15 years get Rs 9,000, and veterans of over 15 years get a paltry Rs 12,000 per month. In comparison, a constable, the lowest-ranked regular policeman, is paid Rs 23,000 per month.

Since SPOs are seen as government stooges and enemies of the militant struggle, they are obvious soft targets. Despite being at the forefront of counter-insurgency operations, their entire training consists of a basic seven-day course that does not go much beyond ceremonial aspects. Those in counter-insurgency operations get another short course on handling weapons, but it is not considered adequate by most police officials. In fact, SPOs who are not involved in counter-insurgency operations are not even issued a weapon.

BCCI set to contribute Rs 20 crore for welfare of armed forces

0

The BCCI will donate Rs 20 crore for the welfare of armed forces in the wake of the Pulwama attack, where at least 49 CRPF personnel were killed.

It has been learnt that BCCI brass plans to invite senior dignitaries from the Indian armed forces (Army, Airforce and Navy) on the day of the IPL opener in Chennai between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 23.

“Yes, the CoA has sanctioned Rs 20 crore which will be contributed towards the Army Welfare Fund. On the opening day with both Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli being present, the first portion of the said amount will be handed over to one of the dignitaries,” a senior BCCI official privy to the development said.

The CoA had decided against having any glittering opening ceremony for the cash-rich event and instead contribute the entire budget for the welfare of armed forces.
“The budget of IPL opening ceremony was around Rs 15 crore during the last edition. It was a decision that BCCI will raise it to Rs 20 crore. The amount will be contributed towards Army Welfare Fund as well as National Defence Fund,” he added.

It was acting president CK Khanna, who had initially proposed to the CoA that a contribution of Rs 5 crore be made in this regard.
“I am not aware of the amount that CoA has earmarked for donation. If it is Rs 20 crore, then it is a great news. This is the least we could do for our soldiers,” Khanna said.

During the Australia ODI series, the Indian team wore camouflaged army caps as a mark of respect for the armed forces, a gesture that drew mixed reactions from the fans.

‘Pak should hand over Dawood, Salahudeen to India to show sincerity in tackling terror’

0

If Pakistan was sincere in tackling terror, then it should at least hand over to India Dawood Ibrahim, Sayeed Salahudeen and other militants who are Indian citizens and residing in that country, government sources said Saturday.

They said Pakistan has failed to take any credible action against Jaish-e-Mohammed and other militant groups even after the dastardly Pulwama attack.

If Pakistan really wants to send a message that it was serious about addressing India’s concerns over militancy, then it should hand over Dawood, Salahudeen and other militants who are Indians, the sources said.

Referring to actions by Pakistan such as holding ceratin terrorists in preventive custody, the sources said India considered them to be cosmetic.

Cosmetic action will not cut any ice.
India has been asking Pakistan to hand over Dawood, Salahudeen and several other militants who are wanted in India in connection with a series of militant attacks.

The sources said India has shared various key details such as coordinates of militant groups operating from Pakistan soil to Islamabad which can be verified by a third country.
After the Pulwama attack, India has mounted a diplomatic offensive to corner Pakistan internationally on the issue of militancy.

India has been pressing for concrete and verifiable action by Pakistan against militant groups operating from Pakistani soil.

Tension between the two nuclear-armed neighbours escalated after the February 14 Pulwama attack and subsequent aerial strike by India on a training camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Balakot on February 26.

Pakistan retaliated the strike next day by unsuccessfully attempting to target Indian military installations. The JeM claimed responsibility for the Pulwama attack.

People should vote for change to put an end to politics of exploitation hands of NC & PDP: Vakil

0

SRINAGAR, MAR 16 : Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Conference Senior Vice President and former Minister Abdul Gani Vakil in a statement today said political instability and uncertainty in the Valley are a result of historical mistakes committed by NC leadership.

“The people of the state are the victims of these their blunders, especially the Indira-Sheikh Accord in 1975. Had the leadership of NC taken a stand, nobody would have eroded the position of 1953, we would not have faced feud, thousands of lives wouldn’t have been lost, people wouldn’t have faced the carnage”, Vakil said while lambasting the previous NC regimes for their role in various machinations against the people of the state.

Addressing the people in a special meeting in Jammu, Abdul Gani Vakil said that “Farooq Abdullah’s talk about Autonomy is hollow and deceitful. What have the previous NC governments done for state’s autonomy? NC government did pass a resolution on autonomy but only to be rejected by the Vajpayee government. Omar Abdullah was the then Foreign Minister but he chose not to resign, which reflects their lust for power at any cost.”

He further said history is a testament to the fact that NC can go to any extent in order to satiate their lust for power. “People should vote for change to put an end to politics of exploitation at the hands of NC & PDP”, he added.

Blaming the dynasty rule for compounding problems in Kashmir, Vakil called for unity against the dynasts. “Dynasty rule is another name of dictatorship and the two families played on the emotions of the people. They only promoted nepotism and devastation. That’s why they became united despite their rift. Had the two families been united for betterment of Kashmir, the state wouldn’t have been in such a mess”, he added.

Germany foreign minister urges Pak, India to resolve Kashmir dispute through dialogue

0

SRINAGAR, MAR 16 : Germany’s foreign minister expressed conditional concern over human rights violations in Kashmir and urged Pakistan and India to resolve the dispute through dialogue.

“If there are human rights violations [in Kashmir], if there are atrocities, then there will be a reaction and that reaction, at times, is difficult to contain,” Heiko Mass told a joint press conference alongside his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi, apparently referring to a attack in Kashmir last month that killed at least 40 CRPF men and raised tensions between India and Pakistan

“Germany acknowledges Pakistan’s efforts toward de-escalating the current tension with India and Premier [Imran] Khan’s offer for dialogue with New Delhi,” he added, citing Islamabad’s quick release of an Indian pilot as a positive step.

Qureshi said he briefed Maas on the recent tension with India and human rights violations in Kashmir.

“Kashmir is the main issue between Pakistan and India, and dialogue is the only way to go forward,” Qureshi said.

Qureshi called terrorism a global challenge and said his country has taken several steps to eliminate this menace from the region. (PTK)

0

SRINAGAR, MAR 16 : Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) called Kashmir’s 16-year-old pacer, Mujtaba Yousuf for trials as the franchise looks to find the replacement for Shivam Mavi who was ruled out of the tournament owing to an injury.

According to reports in Sportskeeda, the franchise has called Yousuf for trials on Sunday, a week before they play their first game in the upcoming IPL against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Kolkata.

The Dinesh Karthik-led side had lost to the same opponents in the qualifier last year to miss out from playing their third final of the tournament.

Yousuf, who is from South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, made his debut for Jammu and Kashmir recently in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament after doing well in U-19 cricket.

The left-arm medium pacer has picked three wickets in six matches in the tournament with the best figure of one for 17 against Nagaland. He has also attended a couple of sessions at the National Cricket Academy in the past to sharpen his cricketing skills. (PTK)

Assembly elections likely to be held after month of Ramadan in J&K

0

SRINAGAR, MAR 16 : Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir may be held after the Holy month of Ramzan highly-placed sources said.

Highly placed sources confirmed News agency Press Trust of Kashmir sources that the crucial election to the J&K assembly may be held between June 5 and 30 in 6 to 8 phases.

Sources said that there is a general consensus that the assembly election in J&K can be held with adequate security deployments before this year’s Amarnath Yatra which begins on July 1.

A day earlier on Friday representatives of various political parties had met the three-member team of special observers, appointed by the Election Commission (EC), and pressed for holding the assembly election and Lok Sabha polls simultaneously in Jammu and Kashmir.

However, the leaders from the National Conference and CPI (M) leader did not meet the poll panel observers, saying they had nothing more to add to the demand for simultaneous polls.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir has been under President’s rule since December 19, 2018, which was necessitated after six months of Governor’s rule ended in the state.  (PTK)
