Part Of Australia’s Queensland Hit By Once-In-A-Century Floods

0

SYDNEY: Once in a century floods have turned streets into rivers and forced thousands to abandon their homes in northeast Australia, with authorities warning of further downpours over the next few days.
Australia’s tropical north experiences heavy rains during the monsoon season at this time of the year, but the recent deluge has surged far above normal levels.

Thousands of residents in the city of Townsville in northeast Queensland were without power and up to 20,000 homes are at risk of being inundated if the rains continue.

Military personnel were delivering tens of thousands of sandbags to affected locals, as Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk warned residents to be careful.

“It’s basically not just a one in 20-year event, it’s a one in 100-year event,” she told reporters Saturday.

The Bureau of Meteorology said a slow-moving monsoonal trough was sitting above northern Queensland state, with some areas expected to receive more than a year’s worth of rain before conditions ease.

“We could see the rain intensify into early next week as the low… moves out to the Coral Sea,” meteorologist Jonathan How told national broadcaster ABC Sunday.

The region receives an average of some 2,000 millimetres (6.5 feet) of rain annually but some towns were already on track to pass that total.

The town of Ingham received 506 millimetres of rain in 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday, of which 145 millimetres fell in just one hour, he added.

I’ve never seen anything like this,” Townsville resident Chris Brookehouse told the ABC, adding that more than one metre of water had flooded his house.

“The volume of water is just incredible. Downstairs is gone, the fridge and freezer are floating. Another five or six steps and upstairs is gone too.”

Blazak said that with adverse weather predicted to continue for up to 72 hours, some regions could see record-breaking levels of rainfall. (Agencies)

Dale Steyn Annihilates Pakistan Fan With Epic Reply To Taunt On Twitter

0

Dale Steyn is one of the most lethal fast bowlers to ever take the cricket field and it seems he is just as lethal off the field as well. The South African pacer, who was rested from the Twenty20 International (T20I) series at home against Pakistan, decided to catch up on other international matches from the comfort of his couch. However, one Pakistan fan mocked Steyn’s absence from the South Africa squad by saying that he needed “some comfort after that spanking by Babar Azam in the Test series”.
Instead of ignoring the troll, Steyn decided to hit back and came up with an epic reply to completely annihilate the Pakistan fan.
The Pakistan fan tried to diffuse the situation by saying that he was just trying to get a reaction out of Steyn but other fans were having none of it and hailed the South African bowler for his “lethal” reply.
Dale Steyn recently achieved a remarkable landmark. During the first Test of the three-match Test series between South Africa and Pakistan, Steyn dismissed Fakhar Zaman to become the highest Test wicket-taker for the Proteas.

Steyn broke the record he shared with Shaun Pollock with Fakhar Zaman becoming his 422nd victim.

Zaman’s dismissal brought to an end more than three years of frustration during which the fast bowler missed no fewer than 27 Test matches because of injury.

South Africa went on to blank Pakistan in the three-match series and followed it up with a hard-fought 3-2 win in the five-match ODI contest.

In the first match of three-T20I series on Friday, Faf du Plessis and Reeza Hendricks shared a record partnership as South Africa ended a nine-match Pakistan T20 winning streak.

South Africa prevailed by six runs in a tense finish after being sent in and making 192 for six.

Pakistan came close, scoring 182 for nine.

Centre To Use “Technology” To Seal Borders With Bangladesh: Rajnath Singh

0

The Central government has decided to use a new technology to seal India’s international borders with Bangladesh passing through Assam and West Bengal by putting in place a comprehensive integrated border management system, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in West Bengal’s Falakata on Saturday.

Regretting that despite requesting for years, the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal has not provided land for fencing the state’s borders with Bangladesh, Mr Singh said, “We never received the cooperation which we should have got.”

“But I would like to tell you, if we don’t get cooperation from the state government, we will put in a new system,” Mr Singh told a rally in Alipurduar district.

The Union Minister said that during his visit to Israel, he saw the Middle East nation taking the help of technology to secure its borders.

“We will put in place a comprehensive integrated border management system. In other words, we will use technology to completely seal the borders with Bangladesh so that infiltrators do not enter any more.

Referring to the killing of around 100 Bharatiya Janata Party BJP activists, Mr Singh said, “If we come to power in the state in future, we won’t spare those who have killed our activists.”

He said the huge gathering at the rally was a proof that there was “no power” on earth which could prevent BJP from winning all the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal this time.

“Your enthusiasm also tells me that when Assembly elections are held here in 2021, there will be a BJP Chief Minister,” he added.

During interrogation, Ahirwar confessed that he killed his girlfriend by strangulating her and later dumped her body in a drain, he said.

“The motive was to get rid of the woman who was pregnant out their illicit relationship which lasted for more than five years,” the official said, adding that the culprit had married another girl from his native place in 2017.

Accordingly, the inquest proceeding got converted into a case of murder, rape and disappearance of the evidence under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code, he added. (PTI)
