Resentment is generated against those not taking interest in discussions in Parliament:PM

New Delhi, Jan 31 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday urged all lawmakers to utilise the Budget Session for having debates with an open mind and said resentment is generated in society against those who do not take interest in discussions in Parliament.

Speaking outside Parliament before the start of the session, the prime minister said there is an awareness among the people in the country and all citizens watch proceedings closely.

“All small incidents reach the common man…due to this, those who do not have interest in discussions, resentment is generated against them,” Modi said.

The prime minister hoped that all lawmakers will keep these public sentiments in mind to utilise the Budget session by taking part in discussions, put forward their views, benefit Parliament, and benefit the government.

He urged lawmakers to make full use of the work that has to be transacted in the session.

“I also know that now when all lawmakers have to go to their respective constituencies, so whatever positive behaviour they show will give them positive benefit in the field as well and it also reflects on how people look at lawmakers,” Modi said.

He said his government’s mantra is ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ and the same spirit will be seen in Parliament.

“We are looking forward to discussing all issues,” the prime minister said.

“I will welcome discussions with an open mind, I will welcome smooth functioning of Parliament, I will welcome that all lawmakers work together for the construction of future India,” Modi said.

Trump to make significant announcement on ISIS next week, says Pompeo

Washington, Jan 31 (PTI) The US President Donald Trump will make a significant announcement on the status of the fight against the ISIS in Syria during his State of the Union Address next week, the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said.

Trump is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union Address in a joint session of the US Congress on February 5.

“The President will make a significant announcement, I think, in the State of the Union next week with respect to the status of the caliphate, the real estate, the grounds from which ISIS had been operating in Syria when this administration came in,” Pompeo told Fox News in an interview.

Pompeo also informed that Trump would host foreign ministers of the “Global Coalition to Defeat the ISIS” and have discussions with them.

“You remember prisoners in cages, people kneeling on the beaches and being beheaded. This was tragic. Next week on February 6, he is hosting foreign ministers of the “Global Coalition to Defeat the ISIS” for an in-depth discussion on defeating them,” he said.

“We also know that in spite of the enormous progress we’ve made and the success that we’ve had, that the threat from radical Islamic terrorism is real and we need to continue to do all that we can to make sure that there’s not a resurgence of ISIS or that all the other variants of that terror regime continue to be under pressure,” he added.

Pompeo said that President Trump will do everything to keep America safe from threats.

“President Trump has made clear it is a priority for him, and as the Secretary of State, I can promise the American people we will continue to do all that we can to keep them safe from this threat,” Pompeo said.

President Trump in December last year surprised the world by announcing that he is withdrawing 2,000 American troops from Syria. The pullout has already started.

Earlier in the day, Pompeo met with Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, during which they exchanged information on developments connected to the planned, phased withdrawal of US troops from Syria now that the ISIS Caliphate has been defeated.

“Both sides underscored their resolve to continue the campaign to completely eradicate ISIS in the Core and its global network of extremists,” State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Paladino said.

Omar shedding crocodile tears over handing of Ratle Power Project to NHPC: PDP

0

Srinagar, Jan 31 : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday has slammed national conference vice President Omar Abdullah over his statement on power projects, stating that NC should remain silent on the issue if they are not able to join forces with the PDP and other stake holders in seeking these power projects back from Delhi. Reacting to Omar Abdullah’s recent statement in which had termed the handing Ratle Power Project to NHPC a Sellout, senior PDP leader and former minister Naeem Akhtar said that while PDP has from the very beginning been against such surrender of state resources and rejected the proposal of handing over Ratle when it was in power. The PDP Government had prepared for its takeover by the JK Power Development Corporation.
He added that it is ironic that now national conference is trying to brazen out the loot it facilitated with the brute majority in the state assembly. “It began with the Indus Water Treaty- the first sharing of water between the dominions of India and Pakistan but the then Prime Minister of the state was at that time neither consulted nor did he find anything wrong in this. Then it started with Salal and ended with joint ventures under Omar Abdullah. In between when NC in 1996 came to power having 60 seats in the assembly, Farooq Abdullah gave away power projects as a price of Omar Abdullah’s continuation in the BJP led government as a junior minister. NC handed electric power to Delhi in order to secure its political power and monopoly in the state,” Akhtar said.
He added that it goes to the credit of PDP that it made the people of Jammu and Kashmir aware of their rights which had been given away at their back by National Conference since they were working only as power brokers and commission agents. It is after 2002 that these issues are being debated in Jammu and Kashmir whether it is JK Bank, extension of central laws or sell out of power projects.
Akhtar said that it is time for everybody to rise above politics and launch a joint campaign in all the three regions of the state because at the end of the day, it is everybody whether he is living in Jammu, Kashmir or Ladakh who is suffering due to the loss of state’s water resources. “We need to rise like one man instead of fighting between themselves. We have to get these power projects from the centre and we must join hands to do that. It is the people of the state whether they are Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs or Buddhists who suffer from load shedding in cold winters of Kashmir and hot Summers of Jammu or in remote areas of Ladakh,” Akhtar said.
The PDP leader added that among the people of the state, the issue of power projects is the prime issue of their survival because everything these days depends on power. “However, it is unfortunate that NC is playing politics over the state’s worsening power scenario and if the party is not brave enough to acknowledge is anti-state role and apologise to people for the same, it must at least stay silent on the issue,” Akhtar said.

Army cites security decision to bar PaK youth from meeting grandmother in Poonch

MS Nazki

Poonch, Jan 31 :  The army on Thursday cited decision taken at a security conference last year for not allowing 21-year-old youth from Pakistan Administered Kashmir who legally crossed over the Line of Control in Chakan-da-Bagh Poonch on January 28 to meet his grandmother and his other relatives in this frontier district.

In this regard, the army has written a letter to Deputy Commissioner Poonch giving reference of the minutes of the security conference held last year, Lt Col Devinder Anand, Jammu-based defense spokesman, told GNS.

“The army has also requested that the individual will be facilitated to meet his family members on this side of the fence whenever he desires but across the fence they (Deputy Commissioner) should reconsider the permission,” he said.

Kamran Aftab, the 21-year-old resident of Bandi, tehsil Khuiratta, district Kotli of PaK travelled on the peace bus on Monday to meet with his many relatives on this side of the LoC including his grandmother who lives in Galota Behrote village, located ahead of LoC fence on the side manned by the Indian army. To reach there, one has to cross gates manned by the army.

On reaching Poonch, Kamran said he moved towards Mendhar in order to meet his grandmother and relatives Mohammad Mahroof son of Faqir Mohammad living in Galota Behrote.

“I reached the army gate so that I can move towards the village where my grandmother and uncle are living but army disallowed me,” Kamran said, adding that he then went to Police Post Balakote along with some local residents and also visited the office of deputy commissioner Poonch and informed him about the matter.

The officer, in turn, wrote a letter to army authorities, asking them to permit Aftab to travel across to meet the grandmother and other relatives.

However, the army authorities again barred him to cross the gates despite the letter of permission by the Deputy Commissioner.

“I am presently living in the house of one of my relative here and wish to go to Galota Behrote village where my grandmother and uncle’s family is living,” Kamran said. (GNS)
