Arctic Cold Blast Impacting North India’s Winter: Met

0

The long and chilly winter in north India this year could be linked to cold blasts from the Arctic region that have been spilling southwards since late December due to the breakdown of a wind circulation called the polar vortex, Indian Met officials said.

As north India continues to reel under severe cold, with the temperature dropping to -1.1 degrees Celsius in Churu, Rajasthan on Tuesday, an official in the India Meteorological Department said the sustained chill over the region appears to be linked to the polar vortex breaking up — an event that has brought freezing spells in Europe and is currently unleashing severe snowstorms in the US.

“The cold from the Arctic has been spilling southwards into Europe and US due to the weakening of westerly currents. This seems to pushing western disturbances more southwards than normal towards northern India. In effect, this is transmitting the cold from southern Europe into north India,” said D Sivananda Pai, head of IMD’s long range forecasting.

Western disturbances (WDs) are pulses of low pressure winds that travel westwards from in and around Mediterranean region, bringing cold, moist winds that either hit the Himalayas — impacting northern India — or blow over to the north.
This January, seven WDs have hit north India as opposed to the normal of four to six. “These weather disturbances have been impacting the region every three-four days this month,” said B P Yadav, head of IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre here.

Ironically, the disruption in the polar vortex was caused by warm winds entering the upper atmosphere over the Arctic causing “sudden stratospheric warming” over the North Pole that sent temperatures in the region rapidly up by tens of degrees. This sent the cold normally trapped in the Arctic spilling out.

The polar vortex is a counterclockwise-spinning rapid current of air that prevents the frigid Arctic weather from escaping into other regions. However, there have been increasing disruptions in the vortex in recent decades because of changes in the jet stream that some studies have attributed to global warming.
The sudden disruption in the polar vortex also seems to have upset IMD’s forecast of a warm winter this season.

“These are intra-season events that are sometimes not captured in the longer range forecasts. However, IMD’s extended range (four-weekly) bulletins have been forecasting the sustained below-normal temperatures in north India,” said Pai.

The last WD of January has now hit north India, and its impact will be felt on Wednesday and Thursday. “Snowfall is expected across the western Himalayan region — J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand — and the northern plains are likely to get rain with hail in some areas,” said Yadav.(Agencies)

The Jammu-Srinagar highway was hit by a landslide early on Wednesday in the Ramban district, a traffic official said.

“An earlier landslide at Panthal was cleared to ensure smooth passage of one-way traffic on the highway. The other one hit at the Anokhi Fall.

“One-way traffic from Srinagar to Jammu will be allowed as soon as the landslide is cleared.

“No traffic will be allowed in the opposite direction to avoid overcrowding,” said the official.

After remaining closed for six days, the strategic highway was restored for one-way traffic on Monday.

Over a dozen times in January the highway has remained closed due to snowfall and landslides.(IANS)

Qureshi telephones Mirwaiz; discusses Kashmir issue

0

Islamabad, Jan 29 (PTI) Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi Tuesday telephoned Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and discussed with him Islamabad’s efforts to highlight the Kashmir issue.

Though there was no immediate reaction from the Ministry of External Affairs but Qureshi’s move may not go down well with India, which maintains that Kashmir is a bilateral issue and there is no space for any third party.

The Foreign Office said Qureshi spoke with Mirwaiz and discussed with him the efforts of Pakistan’s government to highlight the Kashmir issue.

Qureshi also mentioned the June 2018 report issued by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and a report of the UK Parliament, the FO said in a statement.

He also emphasised that India should permit the visit of the Commission of Inquiry, as envisaged in both reports.

Akram slams PCB for calling back Sarfaraz from South Africa

0

Karachi, Jan 29 (PTI) Former captain Wasim Akram on Tuesday slammed Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to call back Sarfaraz Ahmed from South Africa after he was handed a four-match ban for breaching the ICC’s Anti-Racism Code.

Wasim said Sarfaraz should have avoided making the comments that he did in the third One-day International in Durban but it was wrong to speculate about his future in the Pakistan team.

“It was a wrong decision to call him back from South Africa when he could have played in the final T20 on February 6,” said Akram.

“What Sarfaraz did was wrong but it is also a fact that more than anyone else, Pakistanis around the world hyped up his comments and created an issue,” said the fast bowling great.

The former skipper, who is also on the PCB’s cricket committee, was clear that Sarfaraz should remain the national team’s captain.

“There is no need to change the captain before the World Cup. We need a long term captain not a short term one. Shoaib Malik is leading the team now and is doing a fine job but even he has said he will retire from ODis after the World Cup,” he said.

Wasim said the only reason he was backing Sarfaraz was because he was a fighter and had led the side with courage in all formats.

“He is still learning and will get better as he matures and gains more experience. It would be wrong to remove him as captain.”

During the third ODI, Sarfaraz was caught on the stumps microphone as saying after Andile Phehlukwayo played a risky shot: “Hey black [man], where is your mother sitting? What prayer did you get her to say for you today? (Abay kaalay, teri ammi aaj kahan baitheen hain? Kya parhwa ke aya hai aaj tu?)”.

The PCB has expressed its utter disappointment with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to ban Sarfaraz for four matches, noting that he had apologised immediately for his remarks to the South African team and even met with Phehlukwayo and expressed his regrets to him.

Overwhelming if I’m being compared to Ranbir, Ranveer: Rajkummar Rao

0

Mumbai, (PTI) Rajkummar Rao says he feels overwhelmed that people are comparing him to Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh but the actor insists he never sees competition in any art form, especially acting.

Rajkummar has been on a career high with consecutive commercial hits and critically acclaimed films since 2017.

When asked about the perception that he is now in the league of Ranbir and Ranveer, Rajkummar told reporters, “I take it as a compliment. I’m a huge fan of both Ranbir and Ranveer, they are doing tremendously good. I’m looking forward to ‘Gully Boy’ and ‘Brahmastra’.”

“It’s overwhelming, I take it with a lot of gratitude because you’re comparing me with two great actors,” he added.

The “Stree” actor, however, says he wants to grow with every film and not look at things with the lens of competition.

“I never see competition in any art form, specially acting as you are dealing with emotions. I can’t say I cry better then the other actor. You just have to grow with every film as an actor and let people decide what they want to say. I just want to grow and push myself with every film.”

He was speaking at a special event of his upcoming film “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga” on Monday night.

The film features Sonam Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and pairs him with Anil Kapoor for the second time.

Rajkummar says Anil has no ego when he is working and he believes that it is one of the best qualities of the veteran actor.

“He (Anil) works with a lot of passion and dedication. He doesn’t stop until he gets the perfect take. I used to feel very small when he used to ask me ‘Raj how was it, did I do okay?’ That’s his commitment towards his work.

“He has no ego when he’s working. He wants to do better every time. I’ve learnt a lot from him, that no matter how big a star you are, have been working for so long, every film is new, every film your first.”

Co-written by Gazal Dhaliwali and director Shelly Copra, the film is scheduled to release on February 1

Srinagar, Jan 29 (GNS): The people of Moorie Kotiyan, a village located 15 kilometers away from Kalaroos, in north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district are living without electricity.

The people told GNS that their village is still deprived of the electricity in this modern age. Besides, the road leading to the village from Kalaroos is in shambles and has never been macadamized by any political regime.

The residents said that in this modern age, the village has been provided only one latest technology i.e. an Airtel tower.

“Only one Airtel tower has been set up some distance away to the village that too some months back,” they said, adding that the tower also developed some snag two months ago.

“We are very poor and have no influence to reach out to the political leaders or MLAs. This is one of the reasons that the village has been deprived since decades by all the regimes,” they said.

The locals said the political leaders during election campaigns seek votes and later turn deaf ears to their problems.

“We have come to know that the present Governor Satya Pal Malik has done many pro-people initiatives. We appeal him to help us get basic facilities of life,” the residents said. (GNS)
