Pak-Afghan nexus fueling drug menace in J&K and Punjab: DC Shopian

Date:

Srinagar, Jan 21: District Development Commissioner (DDC) Shahid Saleem on Tuesday called Pakistan and Afghanistan as the primary sources of drugs being smuggled into Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

Speaking to reporters, the DDC according to news agency KINS said, “Opium cultivation is carried out in Tasmania, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. While it is regulated by the government in Tasmania, in Pakistan and Afghanistan, it is processed into heroin and pumped into regions like Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.”

He further explained the methods used to enhance drug profits. “They adulterate the heroin, increasing its weight from one kilogram to 30 kilograms by mixing other substances,” he stated.

Shahid Saleem urged civil society and parents to actively contribute to the government’s efforts to combat the drug menace.

“Civil society members should report instances of drug use among youth. Similarly, parents must monitor their children’s activities, friendships, and daily routines, ensuring they attend school regularly and display normal behavior,” he added.
