Srinagar, June 19: The tight-knit journalist fraternity mourned the loss of senior photojournalist Nisar Ahmad, a revered figure in Kashmir who died Wednesday at SMHS Hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 50.
A family member said that Nisaar Ahmad, a dedicated photojournalist for “The Hindu” newspaper, passed away at around 11 a.m. after battling cancer.
Despite undergoing major surgery two years ago, he remained committed to his work until his health took a severe turn. Admitted to the hospital on Tuesday morning, Ahmad’s resilience and dedication remained evident to the end.
Throughout his career, Nisaar Ahmad was known for his poignant photographs that captured the soul of Kashmir.
Before joining “The Hindu,” he made substantial contributions to local media, earning respect and admiration from colleagues and the fraternity alike.
Nisaar Ahmad’s funeral was a somber gathering at his residence in Natipora, Srinagar, held at 3 p.m. Friends, family, and colleagues gathered to pay their respects. The Kashmir Press Photographers Association (KPPA) expressed deep grief over his passing, noting that his death leaves a significant void in the photojournalism community of Kashmir. They extended heartfelt sympathy to his family, praying for Nisaar Ahmad to be granted the highest place in heaven and for strength and patience for his bereaved family during this difficult time.
Fellow journalists across the valley expressed shock and sorrow, remembering Nisaar Ahmad as a dedicated professional whose work deeply enriched journalism in Kashmir. His loss is keenly felt by all who knew and worked with him.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nisar Ahmad, a senior photographer at The Hindu,” the newspaper wrote on the social media platform X. “Nisar was a thorough photojournalist, capturing the turmoil and beauty of Kashmir through his lens until his last breath. His work has left an indelible mark on our hearts and in the annals of photojournalism. His legacy lives on through the countless images that tell the stories of heartbreak, joy, and beauty of the Valley. Rest in peace, Nisar Ahmad. You will be deeply missed.”
Meanwhile Editor-In-Chief Kashmir Despatch Syed Basharat Bukhari, also shared his condolences, expressing deep sympathy for the bereaved family and praying for eternal peace for Ahmad’s soul and courage for his family to bear this irreparable loss.
