Srinagar, Aug 14 : The Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital Srinagar is currently treating around 3,200 patients daily in its Emergency Department, amidst a total daily footfall of approximately 10,000 people, which includes attendants and visitors.

According to details obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the hospital provides consultation, treatment, testing and various patient care services to these emergency cases.

With a bed capacity of 890, the hospital also experiences a significant influx of patients in its inpatient department, where an average of 30 major and 60 minor procedures are conducted each day.

In the 2023-24 period, the hospital attended to 1,063,028 patients in its outpatient department and treated 107,589 patients in its inpatient department. During the same period, the hospital performed 10,726 major and 12,543 minor surgeries.

The hospital’s laboratories conduct around 6,000 tests daily, operating 24/7, while the radiology department performs 30 MRIs, 450 ultrasounds, 125 CT scans, and about 400 X-rays every day.

Despite the overwhelming patient load, officials said that sanitation and hygiene remain top priorities at SMHS and its associated hospitals. “The hospital maintains cleanliness through a three-shift sanitation drive conducted by a dedicated team of 35 sanitation workers,” they said, adding, “Major areas, including the casualty department and some wards covering an area of 62,000 square feet, have been outsourced for proper maintenance.”

Officials said it is the collective responsibility of visitors, patients and hospital authorities to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. They urged the public to cooperate in keeping the hospital premises clean, avoid littering, and refrain from bringing polythene bags into the hospital.

The hospital administration said it is committed to providing quality healthcare with a special focus on sanitation, cleanliness, and hygiene. It requested everyone to support these efforts for the benefit of all patients—(KNO)
