SRINAGAR, Nov 04: The newly elected Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather, called on members to uphold the sanctity and dignity of the House during his inaugural address on Monday.

According to Kashmir Despatch team present at the session, Rather expressed his gratitude to the leaders and members of the House for appointing him as Speaker of the Assembly.

“We must all play our roles sensibly to hold the bureaucracy accountable,” he said. “Whatever responsibilities we have under the Constitution, we will fulfill them.”

Rather emphasized the need to respect and honor the House, noting that the people have entrusted the members with their expectations. “You have been sent here with a great deal of hope,” he remarked.

From his position, he assured that he would strive to meet the expectations of the esteemed members and the House itself. He also urged members to keep in mind the impact of their discussions and decisions on the destitute and poor, indirectly reminding them of their responsibilities to their constituents. “We must avoid a situation where I have to expel any member,” he warned.

The Speaker urged all cabinet ministers and House members to come prepared for sessions, highlighting the importance of being well-versed with the agenda. Reflecting on his long political career, which spans 36 years, Rather noted, “There has not been a single time when the Speaker had to take action against me, nor has any disciplinary action been taken against me.”

Having represented the National Conference for the past 50 years and been a member of the working committee for 45 years, he clarified that, despite his affiliation, as Speaker, he would act impartially. “I am your Speaker now,” he stated. “I hope we can collectively maintain the dignity of this House and that we will become exemplary legislators.”

Rather emphasized that he would not take dictation from any political faction but would adhere to the rules of the House. “Let us rise above party lines and work together for the prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir,” he urged.

He also welcomed the 51 first-time members, congratulating them and reiterating his role as the custodian of the House. “I will assist you in making the administration accountable,” he further added.
