Srinagar Leh highway reopens today

Date:

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will throw open the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh road on Friday as the snow at the high-altitude Zojila Pass was cleared on Thursday, The Tribune reported.

It was shut on November 21 after the second spell of snowfall in the Kashmir region.

Official sources said around 700 vehicles were stranded in and around Zojila.

“The road will be thrown open for traffic on Friday as the snow has been cleared on the Zojila stretch. Due to heavy snowfall, the highway was closed four times since the Valley received the first snowfall,” sources added.

They said 10 equipment and 150 workers were deployed for snow clearance and rescue operations by Project Beacon.

“The Project Beacon teams worked hard and extended hours to clear Zojila at around 11,000 feet to establish connectivity to Leh on Thursday,” a BRO official said.

The BRO official said it had further reinforced its snow-clearance capability by inducting five more equipment to ensure that this vital link to Leh remains open as long as possible, reported The Tribune.
