Srinagar, Jan 31 : After the completion of the Kashmir rail link, the government has shifted its focus about providing train connectivity to Ladakh.

According to the details available, an exercise to construct a railway track from Beri of Bilaspur to Manali-Leh has already commenced.

“Patna based Skylark company has initiated railway track alignment and is conducting surveys. Using satellite-based mapping, the proposed track has been marked with cement towers in Baihna of Balh Valley,” said a source.

“The company officials conducting surveys has generated enthusiasm among locals, who are eager to learn more about the ambitious railway project,” he added.

As per the officials, Bilaspur-Manali-Leh rail line will be constructed in three phases, covering a total distance of 465 km. “Alignment work began on January 20, with tower installations progressing from Bilaspur to Leh via Manali. Towers are being placed at designated locations based on previous satellite surveys,” they added.

“To ensure uninterrupted operations, even in extreme weather, the railway track will be equipped with snow cutters, similar to those successfully used on the Jammu-Kashmir rail line,” said an official.

“The project is not new, as efforts to install railway track towers in Baihna of Balh Valley were initiated five years ago but were subsequently halted. With renewed focus and momentum, authorities are now determined to complete the long-pending infrastructure project,” the official added.

Pertinently, the railway line holds immense strategic importance, as it will facilitate troop movement and supplies to the China border throughout the year.

In December 2024, Member of Parliament from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut while supporting the Railways Amendment Bill 2024 in Parliament raised the issue of railway expansion in Himachal Pradesh.

She emphasized the need for a railway survey in Mandi and highlighted the benefits of connecting the region to major cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Ambala.

According to her, enhanced rail connectivity will significantly boost the development and economic progress of Himachal Pradesh—(KNO)
