President Donald Trump signed a Sunday proclamation that declares Feb. 8 the “Gulf Of America Day” while on Air Force One traveling to Super Bowl LIX.
The recent executive order signed by the president will set in motion the official process to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The proclamation signing took place on Air Force One while Trump was passing over the soon-to-be-renamed gulf.
The executive order gives the Department of the Interior a month to take “all appropriate action” needed to officially make the gulf name change. Trump originally made the promise to rename the gulf during his inaugural as well as during the transition process after his November presidential victory.
The first official U.S. government agency to use the term Gulf of America was the U.S. Coast Guard after Trump signed the new executive order.
“Today, I am making my first visit to the Gulf of America since its renaming. As my Administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America,” Trump stated in the order.
