The recent statement by Mr. Waheed Para regarding reservation and merit in Jammu & Kashmir is not only misleading but also deeply irresponsible. At a time when our youth are striving to build a dignified future amid hardships, it is unfortunate that some choose to play politics over such a sensitive and crucial matter.
Jammu & Kashmir has indeed seen decades of trauma, unemployment, and socio-political unrest. Congress has always acknowledged these harsh realities and stood with the youth of J&K—not through rhetoric, but through action. Whether it was the push for greater educational institutions, employment schemes, or skill development programs, Umer Jaan has consistently advocated for both merit and affirmative action.
However, to label the reservation policy as a “systematic embargo on merit” is an insult to those marginalised communities who have suffered historic injustices. Reservation is a constitutional tool to ensure representation and opportunity—not a hurdle against merit. Umer Jaan believes in proportional justice, not in dividing our society between “meritorious” and “non-meritorious” labels.
If Mr. Para is truly concerned about youth upliftment, he should introspect on what meaningful contribution his party has made towards education reform, youth employment, and mental health infrastructure in the valley. Speeches won’t bring change—policies and unity will.
The Congress Party remains committed to a fair, inclusive, and progressive Jammu & Kashmir. Umer Jaan appeal to all political stakeholders to refrain from creating confusion and bitterness among youth for political gains. Let us work together, not just for merit, but for justice with equality.
Let our future be built on trust, not on divisive narratives.
