Women Assaulted, Injured in Budgam Village Over Land Dispute

Date:

Budgam – An influential family in the Branwar area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district recently assaulted several women from the Gujjar community over a land dispute.

Details available with Kashmir Despatch “A woman named Wazira Begum, aged 50 years, was severely injured as her right ear was allegedly cut with a sharp-edged weapon.”

The aggrieved also protested in Srinagar and demanded action against the accused, who they allege are close relatives (nephews and sons) of Nazir Ahmad Jahara, also known as Nazir Chowdhary, the Vice Chairman of the District Development Council (VC DDC) Budgam.

The details reveal that the Chadoora Police Station has registered a case under FIR No: 121/2024 against twelve persons, including Zaffar Iqbal, Tanveer Iqbal, Yasir, Jahara, Adil Jahara, Tariq Jahara, and others. The case has been filed for rioting, land grabbing, trespassing, and outraging the modesty of women, under sections 191(2), 303, 329, and 74 of the relevant statutes.

“Tariq Jahara is the son of Nazir Ahmad Jahara, the VC DDC Budgam, and the others are his nephews, but even after three days, none of the accused have been arrested.

My land has been encroached upon by the Chowdhary family, and Nazir Jahara and his brother Saifadin are the main culprits. One of the accused, Adil Jahara, works in the Police, and others are government school teachers, and one person, Tariq Jahara, who is the son of Nazir Jahara, the VC DDC Budgam, is a Food Department employee.

Since no one has been arrested in the last three days, my wife was forced to file a written complaint before the National Commission for Women in New Delhi.

A formal complaint has been filed against the VC DDC Budgam, his son, and nephews,” said Ghulam Hassan Chowhan, the husband of Wazira Begum, the victim.

To verify the further developments, Kashmir Despatch spoke to the concerned SHO, who said the investigation is still ongoing. However, the counter-BJP has also registered a case. He further stated that the police are conducting their investigation, and any significant developments will be duly informed.
