Year-End Report: Terrorism Declines as Police Arrest 3,200 for Drug Offenses

Srinagar, Dec 27: Pakistan-sponsored terrorism is at an all-time low in Jammu and Kashmir, five years after the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A. Security agencies have diligently worked to achieve “zero terror” activities within the Union Territory. However, as infiltration with arms and terrorism has become increasingly difficult in recent years, Pakistan has resorted to promoting drug peddling to corrupt the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s efforts to combat drug-related activities have led to a decrease in drug offenses, resulting in the arrest of 3,200 peddlers over the past two years. These arrests have targeted individuals who have been encouraging illegal activities and ensnaring the younger generation.

As 2024 approaches, the police chief revealed to Kashmir Despatch that security agencies have shifted their focus to drug peddlers following significant reductions in terrorism.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, V.K. Bhirdi, disclosed that 2,000 cases have been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, leading to the apprehension of 3,200 individuals involved in drug-related crimes.

As part of the anti-narcotics initiative, properties worth Rs 40 crore linked to drug trafficking have been seized, and approximately 8,000 kanals of illicitly cultivated land have been destroyed.

Highlighting recent progress, the IGP stated that properties valued at Rs 7 to Rs 8 crore have been confiscated in just the past two months.

Another senior security officer informed Kashmir Despatch that the impact of security agencies’ efforts in drug-related cases over the past two years is evident on the ground. Not only are individuals involved being dealt with strictly, but their properties are also being seized, benefiting society as a whole. However, he emphasized the need for increased efforts and active participation from every individual in the fight against this issue to achieve a drug-free Kashmir.

The official indicated that security agencies, led by the police, are successfully dismantling drug trafficking networks operating within the Kashmir Valley. This determined campaign aims to curb the menace of illicit narcotics and restore peace and security in the region.

He noted that, over the past few months, the J&K Police have been gathering intelligence, conducting undercover operations, and coordinating efforts with various law enforcement agencies to target drug peddlers and disrupt their supply chains. Their concerted actions have yielded significant results, resulting in multiple arrests and substantial seizures of contraband substances.

Furthermore, he added that the crackdown has also exposed the intricate web of drug trafficking that extends beyond state boundaries. Investigations have uncovered links between local smugglers and international drug cartels, highlighting the need for enhanced cooperation among different law enforcement agencies to effectively combat this transnational threat.
