VINOD BHAT
NEW DELHI, Jan 2: In a major push towards strengthening India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem and reducing dependence on imports, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has approved 22 additional proposals under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), involving a projected investment of ₹41,863 crore, expected production worth ₹2,58,152 crore and generation of 33,791 direct jobs.
These fresh approvals come in continuation of the 24 applications cleared earlier with an investment outlay of ₹12,704 crore, underscoring the government’s sustained momentum in building a robust and self-reliant electronics manufacturing base in the country.
According to MeitY, the newly approved proposals cover manufacturing across 11 critical target segments that have wide cross-sectoral applications in mobile manufacturing, telecommunications, consumer electronics, strategic electronics, automotive electronics and IT hardware. The focus on these segments is aimed at addressing long-standing gaps in domestic component manufacturing while enabling India to move up the global electronics value chain.
Focus on Core Components and Sub-Assemblies
Among the 11 target products, five are bare components considered the backbone of electronic devices. These include Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), capacitors, connectors, enclosures and lithium-ion (Li-ion) cells.
Approvals for PCB manufacturing, including high-density interconnects (HDIs), have been granted to nine companies—India Circuits Private Limited, Vital Electronics Private Limited, Signum Electronics Limited, Epitome Components Private Limited, BPL Limited, AT & S India Private Limited, Ascent-K Circuit Private Limited, CIPSA TEC India Private Limited and Shogini Technoarts Private Limited. PCBs form the foundation of nearly all electronic products, and domestic capacity expansion in this segment is expected to significantly reduce import reliance.
In the capacitor segment, essential for energy storage and power conditioning in electronic circuits, approvals have been awarded to Deki Electronics Limited and TDK India Private Limited. TDK is a major global manufacturer of electronic components, and its India expansion is expected to bring advanced manufacturing practices and technology transfer into the country.
For high-speed connectors, a critical component in advanced electronics and data-intensive applications, approval has been granted to Amphenol High Speed Technology India Private Limited.
Strengthening Enclosures and Battery Ecosystem
Manufacturing of enclosures for mobile phones, IT hardware and related devices has been approved for Yuzhan Technology (India) Private Limited, Motherson Electronic Components Private Limited and Tata Electronics Private Limited. These companies represent a mix of global expertise and strong domestic manufacturing capabilities, positioning India as a competitive destination for electronics enclosure manufacturing.
In a significant move to support the battery ecosystem, ATLbattery Technology (India) Private Limited has received approval for manufacturing Li-ion cells for digital applications. Li-ion cells are critical for consumer and industrial electronics, and domestic production is expected to enhance supply security while supporting emerging sectors such as electric mobility and energy storage.
Boost to Sub-Assembly Manufacturing
Under the sub-assembly category, approvals have been granted to Dixon Electroconnect Private Limited for manufacturing optical transceivers (SFPs), a key component in telecom and data communication networks. Kunshan Q Tech Microelectronics (India) Private Limited has been approved for camera module sub-assemblies, widely used in smartphones and surveillance systems.
Samsung Display Noida Private Limited, one of the world’s leading electronics brands, has received approval for manufacturing display module sub-assemblies. This is expected to significantly strengthen India’s display manufacturing capabilities, a segment traditionally dominated by imports.
Deepening the Supply Chain
To further deepen the electronics manufacturing supply chain, MeitY has approved three critical upstream components. NPSPL Advanced Materials Private Limited has been cleared to manufacture anode material, a crucial input for Li-ion cells that determines energy density and lifecycle.
Wipro Global Engineering and Electronic Materials Private Limited has received approval for manufacturing copper-clad laminates, the base material for PCBs, which accounts for nearly 30 per cent of PCB production costs. Hindalco Industries Limited has been approved for manufacturing aluminium extrusions for mobile phone enclosures—an item currently being entirely imported into the country.
Geographically Balanced Growth
The approved units will be spread across eight states—Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Officials said this wide geographic distribution reflects the government’s emphasis on balanced industrial development and the expansion of electronics manufacturing beyond traditional hubs.
Towards a Global Electronics Hub
MeitY stated that these approvals will play a crucial role in strengthening domestic supply chains, lowering import dependence for critical components and supporting high-value manufacturing in India. The move aligns closely with the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a global hub for electronics manufacturing.
“With these approvals under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme, India takes a bold and forward-looking step in its electronics manufacturing journey,” the ministry said, adding that the initiative will enhance technological self-reliance while creating large-scale employment opportunities across the country.
