Militants hold elderly person as hostage

Srinagar, September 28, : A fierce broke out between miltants and forces on Saturday morning, in Batote town of Ramban district in Jammu region.

Sources said that a group of militants tried to stop a private vehicle on Batote-Kishtiwar road in Ramban district, 9 kilometers ahead of Batote on National Highway 44, near Bhagla Dam at 7.30 in the morning, but the driver succeeded in running away from the spot.

The said driver then informed quick reaction team of the Army about the presence of two suspicious individuals on the highway, leading to a brief exchange of fire with the Army team.

Militants hurled a grenade and also opened fire on the team. The grenade missed the target and exploded on the road, without inflicting any damage to army.

According to sources army opened retaliatory fire on the militants, who ran towards Batote; however soldiers continued their chase till old town Batotae, where the militants entered a house in ward No. 6, owned by a person namely Vijay Kumar.

They hold themselves up in the said house, and hurled grenades and opened fire on the security forces.

Sources said that security forces rescued all the five inmates including the elderly person, who was kept hostage by the militants in the house.

Among the rescued there were also two women, who according to independent sources were allowed to leave the house by the militants, before the encounter started.

Forces cordoned off the area and laid a siege around the house and asked the holed up militants to surrender.

When militants refused to lay down their arms, a fierce encounter started between the sides, culminating at the killing of three militants.

The slain militants have been identified as Osama, Zahid and Haroon, of Hizbul Mujahedeen all residents of Kishtiwar.

The movement of the traffic on the highway was stopped following the incident as a precautionary measure, the officials said. (CNS)
