Accidents a new normal

Date:

Frequency of road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir is becoming a new normal. Today only over five lives were lost in Rambhan area in Jammu province.

The day before a young and the only bread earner lost his life in tragic road accident at flyover in Srinagar.

It seems the authorities concerned consider these accidents and deaths caused therein as mere statistics. We have enough of laws for regulating the traffic in the state.

Does these laws help in any way to reduce the rate of accidents and loss of precious lives in our state? The answer is no.

Our traffic cops have confined their duties to just checking the pollution certificates of the light motor vehicles.

It seems checking the documents has been major focus of their trainers during their probation.

Nobody in the prosecution wing of the traffic department bothers to take the charge sheets they file on daily basis before various courts against traffic violators to their logical conclusion.

While it is imperative on the traffic department to regulate the traffic strictly as per the traffic laws, it is also incumbent upon the people to abide these laws and prevent tragic mishaps that occur in our state on daily basis.

The government also needs to focus on the widening of the roads and implementation of single lane system so that loss of life is reduced to the bear minimum.
