NEW DELHI, Nov 26: Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced three transformative railway projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, boosting economic growth, and promoting sustainability across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), these initiatives encompass a 375 km railway network expansion with a financial outlay of ₹7,927 crore.
The key projects include the Jalgaon–Manmad 4th line (160 km), Bhusawal–Khandwa 3rd & 4th lines (131 km), and the Prayagraj–Manikpur 3rd line (84 km). These corridors will significantly enhance passenger and freight movement, strengthen links between Mumbai, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, and provide essential connectivity to ports like Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai and the upcoming Vadhwan Port.
Boost to Economy and Environment
The railway projects aim to drive socio-economic growth while achieving remarkable environmental milestones:
Increased Cargo Capacity: Expected to handle an additional 50 million tons of cargo annually.
Diesel Savings: Projected savings of 15 crore liters of diesel each year.
Reduced Emissions: A reduction of 271 crore kilograms of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to planting 15 crore trees.
Completion Timeline: Four years.
These initiatives will reduce logistics costs, enhance industrial and agricultural exports, and facilitate seamless container movement, especially benefiting emerging industries in the Khandesh region and the Purvanchal belt.
Empowering Farmers with Shetkari Samridhi Rail
The Minister also highlighted the overwhelming success of the Shetkari Samridhi Rail between Deolali and Danapur, which achieved 200% occupancy since its launch. Designed to transport agricultural produce alongside passengers, this train service has been lauded for its farmer-centric approach. Plans are in place to replicate the model across other regions, offering small-scale farmers affordable and reliable transport solutions.
Safety Revolution with Kavach 4.0
In a major technological leap, the Kavach 4.0 safety system is set to equip 10,000 locomotives within the next six years. Key highlights include:
Nationwide installation of Kavach technology across rail lines.
Enhanced safety and operational efficiency for trains.
Cutting-edge features, including Automatic Train Protection (ATP), to enable speeds of 130 km/h and beyond.
Rapid installation capability, with locomotives equipped in just 22 hours post-training.
Cultural and Religious Connectivity
The expanded rail network will also benefit pilgrims and tourists, improving access to destinations like Trimbakeshwar, Omkareshwar, Kashi Vishwanath, and Chitrakoot. Enhanced connections to UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Khajuraho, and wildlife sanctuaries like Yawal will promote tourism and cultural preservation.
These railway projects underscore the government’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development, rural empowerment, and economic growth. By improving connectivity and operational efficiency, the initiatives aim to build a greener, safer, and more inclusive transportation ecosystem in India.
