Those attacked CRPF yesterday killed within 24 hours: IGP

Shopian, Oct 20 : Five militants were killed in two gunfights in South Kashmir’s Pulwama and Shopian district on Tuesday.

An official told Kashmir Despatch that two militants were killed in an encounter that raged between government forces and militants in Melhoora area of Zainapora belt in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday evening.

He said that one militant was killed on Monday evening while another one was killed on Tuesday morning, as operation was halted due to darkness, however, cordon was tightened to ensure that no trapped militant can flee and operation resumed on Monday morning.

Earlier, an official said that a joint team of Police, Army’s 55 RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation based on a specific information about the presence of militants in the area on Monday evening. He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them which was retaliated, triggering an encounter.

A police official told Kashmir Despatch that two militants were killed in the encounter. One AK-47 rifle along with 2 magazines, one Pistol along with 1 magazine and 2 pouches were recovered from the encounter site. He identified slain militants as Towseef Ahmad Khanday son of Abdul Salam Khanday resident of Hangulbuch Kulgam and Umar Thoker son of Gulzar Ahmad Thoker resident of Shiganpora Kulgam, both affiliated with proscribed outfit HM. Both of them were involved in recent attacks in Kulgam-Shopian areas, the officer added.

Meanwhile, In another encounter at Hakripora area of South Kahsmir’s Pulwama district, three unidentified militants were killed on Tuesday.

Giving details to Kashmir Despatch a police officer said three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were killed in an encounter in Hakripora area in Pulwama district.

Meanwhile Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said that this group was involved in the attack on CRPF yesterday in which two CRPF troopers were injured.

He said “We succeeded in killing the attackers of yesterday within 24 hours with the help of coordination between joint forces and human intelligence in place”. IGP added.
