Baramulla, June 04: Thousands of supporters flocked to the home of jailed politician Engineer Rashid moments after the Election Commission of India declared him the winning candidate from the Baramulla constituency.

The announcement sparked celebrations across the constituency, with thousands taking to the streets in joy. Firecrackers lit up the sky as people distributed sweets and exchanged congratulations in the various towns and villages of north Kashmir’s Baramulla constituency.

Throughout the election campaign, Rashid’s supporters demonstrated unwavering loyalty. They campaigned tirelessly for the imprisoned politician, rallying behind his son who stood as his representative at numerous events and gatherings.

The sense of victory was palpable.

“This is not just Rashid’s win; it’s a victory for democracy,” said Muhammad Ashraf, a long-time supporter told Kashmir Despatch. “Despite all odds, the voice of the people has been heard.”

Supporters recall the many challenges faced during the campaign. “We braved harsh weather and political pressures, but our resolve never wavered,” said Shazia Begum while talking to Kashmir Despatch, who campaigned door-to-door in support of Rashid. “His vision and dedication to our community kept us motivated.”

Engineer Rashid, was unable to participate directly due to his incarceration. Yet, his absence only seemed to strengthen his supporters’ resolve. “We knew he was with us in spirit,” said Farooq Ahmad, another supporter while talking to Kashmir Despatch. “His ideals and dreams for Baramulla constituency became our own.”

The celebration at Rashid’s home was particularly poignant. His son, who played a crucial role in maintaining the campaign’s momentum, met the supporters and thanked them for the support.

As night fell, the celebrations continued, with supporters dancing and singing traditional songs. The streets, usually quiet, were alive with a sense of communal triumph and hope for the future. “This is just the beginning,” said Rafiqa, a young volunteer. “We have shown that our voices matter. Now, we will work together to bring about the change Rashid envisioned.”

“This victory belongs to all of us,” said Bashir Ahmad, an elder from Old town Baramulla. “We have proven that no matter the circumstances, the spirit of democracy cannot be imprisoned.”

Meanwhile, all the routes towards his constituency were jam-packed with people from different parts of Kashmir leader.

How Engineer Rashid Contested the Election from Prison:

Engineer Rashid’s election campaign was spearheaded by his two sons, Abrar Rashid and Asrar Rashid. They organized rallies and public meetings on his behalf and expressed confidence in his victory based on the enthusiastic crowds at their gatherings.

“My father has been incarcerated for five years. His absence made campaigning challenging. Initially, I felt isolated, but people rallied around me. This showed that not just North Kashmir, but the entire region supports my father,” PTI cited Abrar as saying.

Abrar emphasized that his father was a dedicated advocate for the people, consistently raising their concerns within and outside the assembly.
