Battle for Wagoora: Fierce Competition Brews Ahead of Assembly Elections

BARAMULLA, Aug 23: The political storm sweeping across Kashmir has set the stage for a highly competitive showdown in the Wagoora Assembly seat, where a battle of heavyweights is brewing in the lead-up to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.

The landscape is shifting rapidly, and as per a ground survey conducted by Kashmir Despatch, key contenders are gearing up for what promises to be an intense electoral contest. Among the prominent candidates are several political figures with established track records and deep-rooted influence in the region.

At the forefront of this contest is Syed Basharat Bukhari, a significant figure who recently returned to the fold of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after his “Ghar Wapsi” or homecoming. Bukhari’s re-entry into the political arena has sparked considerable attention, with many viewing him as a pivotal player in this election.

Another formidable candidate is Advocate Irfan Hafeez Lone, who won in the previous District Development Council (DDC) elections and has since built a strong political base.

According to political analysts and sources on the ground, Lone’s past performance as a DDC member, where he reportedly exceeded the expectations of his constituency, places him in a strong position. His effective engagement with the electorate and grassroots connections have made him a serious contender for the Wagoora seat.

Adding to the mix is Safeena Beigh, another DDC election victor. However, Beigh appears to be struggling to gain traction this time around. According to sources, her tenure has left some voters dissatisfied, with allegations that she has fallen short of meeting expectations.

Despite these challenges, political insiders suggest that a shift in public opinion could still work in her favor as the election approaches.

Shabir Ahmad Shah of the Apni Party and Mohammad Yaqoob Wani of the National Conference (NC) are also vying for the Wagoora seat. Shah, with his Apni Party backing, seeks to carve out a niche in this competitive field, while Wani aims to consolidate NC’s traditional support base.

Suhail Bukhari, who recently parted ways with the PDP, remains a wildcard in this contest. However, as per the latest survey, he has yet to make significant inroads with the electorate. Meanwhile, Lone Aijaz is expected to represent the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), adding yet another dimension to this multifaceted race.

As the campaign heats up, all eyes are on Syed Basharat Bukhari and Advocate Irfan Hafeez Lone.

According to political analysts interviewed by Kashmir Despatch, the contest is likely to come down to a head-to-head battle between these two candidates.

Bukhari’s recent return to the PDP and Lone’s reputation for effective governance make them the frontrunners in what is expected to be a close and competitive race.

Though Safeena Beigh currently trails in third place, she cannot be written off entirely, as shifting dynamics could still alter the race’s outcome. Meanwhile, the remaining candidates will need to work hard to sway undecided voters in what promises to be a tight contest.

With the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections set for September 18, 25, and October 1, the Wagoora seat will be one to watch closely. The results, due to be announced on October 4, will reveal whether the electorate favors a return to traditional leadership or seeks new directions in the region’s evolving political landscape.

The election’s outcome remains uncertain, but what is clear is that Wagoora is set to witness one of the fiercest contests in the upcoming election, as local power players clash in their bid to secure victory.
